Mr George Mahlalela

Mr G Mahlalela was born on the 4th of February 1964 in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga province.

At the beginning of 2002 he was appointed as the Head of Transport Enterprise Development and Logistics for the department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal. His responsibilities included the execution of the public and freight transport mandate for the province.

He joined the Department of Transport in February 1995 as a Private Secretary to the Provincial Minister of Transport. He was in this position until the beginning of September 1996, when he was appointed as the Acting Taxi Registrar for the province. Subsequent to that in July 1997 he was appointed as the Director of Public Transport in KwaZulu-Natal. He was in this position until his recent appointment to be the Head of Transport Enterprise Development and Logistics.

Before he joined government he was working for various Non-Governmental Organisations both in Durban and Cape Town in the field of Urban Development specialising in Organisational Development and Strategic Planning. His professional career started at the beginning of 1992 after completion of his tertiary studies in Political Science and Economic History. This was done through the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg).

Mr Mahlalela’s educational qualifications include:

1998-1999: Management Development Programme with the University of Durban-Westville Graduate School of Business
1991: Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
Major: Economic History and Political Science
1990: Bachelor of Arts

Mr Mahlalela has served in various committees and statutory bodies dealing with policy and planning issues in transport. Key bodies he has participated in are the following:

1995-1997: National Taxi Task Team – Formulate a comprehensive restructuring plan for the taxi industry
1997 – 2000: King Shaka International Airport Development Initiative
2000-2001: Umthombo Investments – Government representative on its initiative to create corporate and investment structures for the taxi industry.
2001- present:  Board Member of the South African Rail Commuter Corporation – a property and asset owner of the commuter rail infrastructure in South Africa.

His favourite hobbies are: soccer, music and reading.
