DECEMBER
Development Imbizo: 18 - 19 December 2003
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, S’bu Ndebele, Deputy President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, together with national deputy ministers of Defence and Minerals & Energy, Nozizwe Madlala-Routlidge and Suzan Shabangu, accompanied by local MEC’s for Health, Agriculture & Environment, and Public Works, Zweli Mkhize, Dumisani Makhaye and Mike Mabuyakhulu respectively will be hosting an Imbizo on Development.

As part of the proceedings, MEC Ndebele will open a R2.8 million bridge, known as Mnweni River Bridge. The Bridge will provide a link and access to a million people with the following key institutions: 

  • Clinic at Olivershoek

  • Emaosi Hospital

  • Gqomu Police Station, and

  • Surrounding schools

Thursday, 18 December 2003, at Bergville, Somtseu Primary School, at 10h00.
Friday, 19 December 2003, at KwaMbonambi, Dondotha Sports Fields, at 10h00.

Main Road 499: Sod-turning Ceremony: 19 December 2003
The Transport MEC will turn the sod to mark the commencement of work on Main Road 499, at Kwambonambi, near Empangeni on Friday, 19 December 2003 at 10h00. The road is 12 km long, linking KwaMbonambi and Dondotha, and the projected amount of money that will be spent to upgrade and blacktop the road is 14 million rands.
Launch of the Summer Holiday Road Safety Plan : 8 December 2003
S’bu Ndebele, Transport MEC for KwaZulu-Natal will launch the Department’s 2003/2004 Summer Holiday Road Safety Plan.
Official Launch of the Department’s Road Safety Education Web: 8 December 2003
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, in its continuing effort to reduce death and injury on our roads, has compiled the Road Safety Education website. Its main intention is to help people develop a better road sense - whether you are a driver, pedestrian or passenger.

The website has been divided into four sections: the childhood years; the young adult years; the senior years and a general section. It covers subjects such as teaching children road safety, road rage, vehicle hijacking and what older drivers should know. It is a sound base of knowledge that teachers and parents can also use to help develop sound road sense in children.

The website will be officially launched by Minister S'bu Ndebele, MEC for Transport in KwaZulu-Natal, as part of the Department's 2003/2004 Summer Holiday Road Safety Programme.

Main Road 253: Sod- turning Ceremony: 2 December 2003
KwaZulu- Natal MEC for Transport, Mr S'bu Ndebele will perform the sod-turning ceremony for Main Road 253 and Imfule Bridge at Obuka near Empangeni on Tuesday, 2 December 2003 at 10h00.

NOVEMBER
Inter-faith Road Safety Day: 7 November 2003 at 10:00 at the Bhekuzulu Hall, University of Zululand, Empangeni
This event is a culmination of a province-wide programme that has already gone to Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Ladysmith. The Inter-Faith Road Safety Programme forms part of the KZN Transport Department's mass mobilisation plan to spread the gospel of road safety in order to reduce the number of road deaths on the province's roads. This programme is derived from past road safety campaigns such as Siyabakhumbula ("We Remember Them") which was held during 1997 and proved highly effective. As part of the Inter-faith Road Safety Programme, the Department in conjunction with religious leaders from various faiths will be ensuring that the road safety message goes right down to grassroots level. Part of the programme will also include prayer meetings at high-accident frequency locations.

OCTOBER
Driver of the Year Competition to be held at Kings Park Stadium on 30-31 October 2003

The two-day competition, arranged by the National Department of Transport in partnership with the private sector, will take place on Thursday and Friday at the Kings Park Soccer Stadium in Durban where 72 participants representing all nine provinces will compete. Drivers of heavy motor vehicles, including buses have a chance to showcase their finest, safest driving skills and road safety knowledge during the National Driver of the Year Competition.

Provincial Driver of the Year Competition commencing at 07h30 at the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), Umdhloti
4 September 2003

The aim of this competition is to encourage heavy motor vehicle drivers to accept greater responsibility for road safety, to improve their standard of driving and to create positive spin-offs for the companies who trust their drivers with these valuable assets. It is also to reward companies that have allowed their drivers to participate in the road safety programmes of the Transport Department. Winners of the provincial leg will be entered into the national competition which will be held in KZN during the end of October.

AUGUST
Thursday, 28 August 2003: Annual Departmental Cultural Day commencing at 10h00 at the University of Durban-Westville, Durban.
This initiative forms part of the department's programme to solidify unity amongst its staff by celebrating and appreciating the cultural diversity within the organisation. This is an event for all staff members within the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport.

The objectives of the Cultural Day include creating an opportunity to discover, understand and learn from each other's different lifestyles as well as creating mutual understanding and promoting a culture of tolerance for each other's differences.

Monday, 25 August 2003: Official launch of the Zibambele Training Programme commencing at 10h00 at the DLI Hall, Greyville, Durban.
As part of the department's Women's Day Celebrations, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Mr S'bu Ndebele will officially launch the Zibambele Training Programme for the Zibambele Road Maintenance Programme. The Zibambele Road Maintenance Programme is a nationally acclaimed poverty alleviation programme, which benefits more than 14 000, mostly women-headed households in KZN.

Also to be launched is the Zibambele musical CD by well-known artists Makitaza and Vusi Ximba. The CD is another mechanism for communicating the Zibambele Programme and other transport messages to the public.

Thursday, 15 May 2003: Sod turning ceremony (Chief Mthethwa area)
Tuesday, 13 May 2003 at 18h00: Official Launch of the installation of the first South African Intelligent Road Studs. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Mr S'bu Ndebele will officially launch the installation of the first South African Intelligent Road Studs on Tuesday, 13 May 2003 at 18h00 at Mthonjaneni, Melmoth.
Tuesday, 6 May 2003 at 10h00: Official Opening of the Driving Licence Test Yard at Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), Mariannhill, Pinetown. More than R1 million has already been spent on the upgrading of this facility in the last nine months, and more money will be spent in the coming months in order to minimise fraud and corruption in the issuing of learners and driving licences.
Tuesday, 6 May 2003 at 11h00: Memorial Service at Malangeni Sports Grounds near Umzinto to honour the 13 victims who were killed last Wednesday in a taxi crash near Umzinto. KZN MEC for Transport, Mr S’bu Ndebele, KZN MEC for Education, Mr Narend Singh, other members of Parliament and a host of other dignitaries will be present.

Monday, 14 April 2003: Zibambele Report-Back – Nongoma

Zibambele is one of the Department’s flagship programmes and the media will be informed of the impact on poverty alleviation that this programme has brought to thousands of rural households. Transport to this event will be provided.

Wednesday, 9 April 2003 at 13h30: Media Briefing – Transport Budget Vote - Parliamentary Buildings, Longmarket Street, Pietermaritzburg

KZN Transport MEC, Mr S’bu Ndebele will furnish details as well as progress on the department’s programmes in the past financial year as well as plans for the current financial year.

MARCH
Sunday, 9 March 2003 at 10h00: Sod Turning Ceremony – D903 Izingolweni near Port Shepstone

Approximately R1 million will be spent on the upgrading of this road which is situated in the Ugu District on the KZN South Coast in order to provide much needed access to the residents of this area. MEC Ndebele will perform the sod turning.

Thursday, 6 March 2003 at 12h00: Media Briefing – Fraud and Corruption - Parliamentary Buildings, Longmarket Street, Pietermartizburg.

The purpose of this event is to furnish details as well as progress on the department’s initiatives in combating fraud and corruption at all vehicle and licensing centres in the province. KZN MEC for Transport, Mr S’bu Ndebele and senior officials of the Department will be on hand to answer questions from the media.

FEBRUARY
Tuesday, 25 February 2003 at Edendale Hospital Grounds at 10h00 – Official Opening of Edendale Pedestrian Bridge

The Edendale Road in Pietermaritzburg is one of the most dangerous roads in KwaZulu-Natal. During March 2002 a survey was conducted on the Situational and Perception Analysis of Accidents and Road Safety on the Edendale Road by the University of Natal Interdisciplinary Accident Research Centre (UNIARC) and several recommendations were made. To this end the KZN Department of Transport has implemented several of the recommendations.

30-Year Long Service Awards
101 staff members of the KZN Department of Transport will be receiving watches and certificates at a ceremony to be held on 13 February 2003.
