Passing Out Parade of 49 Traffic Officers
15 December 2006 at 10:00 at the YMCA, Pietermaritzburg

Road Safety will receive a major boost when MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele atttends the passing out parade of the 49 traffic officers who will be graduating from the Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Traffic Training College.
Scrapping of Skorokoro Taxi Vehicles to be held at Woodburn Stadium, Pietermaritzburg on 9 December 2006

The KwaZulu- Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele will launch the long awaited scrapping of old and unroadworthy taxi vehicles in KwaZulu-Natal. This event will coincide with the official opening of the Taxi Scrapping Administrator offices, which will be based at Mkhondeni in Pietermaritzburg.

Launch of Summer Holiday Road Safety Plan

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele will unveil an intensive summer holiday road safety plan on the N3 Northbound in Cato Ridge on Monday (December 4, 2006) at 9 am. Roadblocks will commence at 7am prior to the official launch. Cele is expected to announce a number of operations that the department will embark on throughout the festive season.

The late musicians Mathosa and Khanyile were ambassadors of Road Safety and they featured in the Department’s road safety awareness CD’s aimed at creating awareness to all road users. The special accolade is in recognition of their contribution toward saving lives. The two were active in preaching the gospel of road safety and recorded albums, collaborating with the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Boom Shaka, Mthunzi Namba, Deborah Frazer, Mandoza, Phuzekhemisi and many more.

 
NOVEMBER
Commemoratation Service for Department’s Fallen Road Safety Ambassadors

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has committed the month of November and December to pay tribute to all victims of road crashes by embarking on a remembrance campaign in all regions under the theme Siyabakhumbula. MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele together with transport portfolio committee members and other road safety ambassadors will attend the commemoration of its two fallen Road Safety Ambassadors Lebo Mathosa and Jabu Khanyile.

“Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Workshop”

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport will be hosting a two days Provincial workshop on Expanded Public Works Program. The purpose of the workshop is to develop a logical framework and business plan with measurable targets for the remaining term of the EPWP (2006/2007, 2007/2008 and 2008/2009). The intention is to get commitments from the provincial departments, municipalities and state owned enterprises on the contribution to the national target of one million jobs and budgets that they will set aside for EPWP implementation in their organisations.

THEME: TRANSPORT THE HEARTBEAT OF SOUTH AFRICA’S ECONOMY

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele will host a media briefing to officially launch transport month activity plans for KwaZulu-Natal province. The media briefing will be held at the Hilton Hotel (Polo Room) in Durban on Monday 02 October 2006 at 7h30 am for 8h00 am.

The Transport month campaign is a government initiative geared towards strengthening the link between awareness-raising and policy measures to reduce traffic congestion by particularly promoting the use of public transport. It is particularly for this reason that the Minister of transport Jeff Radebe and MECs for Transport declared October as National Transport Month at the transport lekgotla in 2005, in order to promote sustainable transport solutions such as walking, cycling, public transport and car travel with two or more occupants and also to stimulate public reflection about the need to manage unsustainable car use, especially in the metropolitan cities of South Africa.
 
AUGUST
Bus Indaba at Champagne Sports Resort, Drakensberg

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport will host a Bus Indaba from 30 August to 1 September 2006 at the Champagne Sports Resort in the Drakensberg.

The purpose of the Indaba is to formally adopt the draft constitution and elect members for the KWAZULU-NATAL BUS COUNCIL (KWANABUCO). This event follows the Bus Imbizo that was held during March this year where an interim bus structure was elected.
Memorial Service for Eleven Killed in Accident at Tongaat at 9am, Gandhi Stadium (Inanda)

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele will attend the memorial service of eleven victims killed in a gruesome road crash involving a minibus taxi and a stationary bus on Saturday, the 19th of August 2006.

Women’s Day Celebration at UShaka Marine World at 10 am

MEC Cele will celebrate Women’s Day with women from the cleaning services of the Department of Transport with the aim of recognizing their invaluable role in the department regardless of rank or nature of the job. MEC Cele upholds the ideals of defending the weak and the significance of spending the day with women largely from previously disadvantaged backgrounds in the quest to bring hope and courage to women at all levels as we celebrate Women’s month 2006.

Opening of the Ballito Licensing Authority at Brae-side in Ballito at 10 am

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele will officiate the opening of Ballito Licensing Authority on Thursday 10 August 2006 at Braeside in Ballito at 10 am.

This initiative comes after a call from the desperate community of Ballito and surroundings who travel long distances to nearby towns and cities for vehicle registration and licensing. A proposal for the new offices was forwarded to the MEC at the 2004 Summer Holiday Launch in Stanger. A principle decision was made that the offices will be constructed and completed by the end of June 2006.

Road Opening of P577 Duffs Road on 25 July 2006 in Newland East at 10:00

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. B.H. Cele will officiate the opening of the P577 Duffs Road, in Newlands East, near V.N. Naik School for the Deaf at 10.00am. Also expected to attend is the National Minister of Transport Mr. Jeff Radebe and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr S’bu Ndebele.
Memorial Service for 7 People killed at Majuba Pass to be held at Cecil Emitt Sports Ground, Vryheid on 20 July 2006

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. B.H. Cele will attend the memorial service of eight victims that were killed in a horror crash involving a taxi and a truck last week at N11 Majuba Pass outside Newcastle this Thursday.
Sod Turning and Border Post Relocation for Sani Pass on 18 July 2006 at the Sani Pass Border Post (Underberg) at 10:00

Pretoria: Transport Minister Jeff Radebe, Environmental Affairs Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk and Lesotho Transport Minister Misithela will jointly unveil the Sod Turning and Border Post relocation project. The total cost to this project is R160m and involves the upgrading of the 33.1 km access road from current gravel to a sealed road from the Himeville intersection to the Sani Pass top. It forms part of the regional road link, linking South Africa with the Mokhotlong area of Lesotho.
 
JUNE
Passing out parade of 74 traffic officers

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele will attend the passing out parade of 74 traffic officers on Friday 30 June at the YMCA Hall in Pietermaritzburg at 10h00.

Out of the 74 officers that will be graduating tomorrow 63 are from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and 11 are from the local municipalities. After extensive training the 74 traffic officers will be deployed in respective authorities and units in order to beef up manpower and furthermore push forward the message of road safety.

MEC Bheki Cele presents his Budget Speech
Monday 24 April 2006, KwaZulu-Natal Legislature at 9am

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele will present his budget speech for the financial year 2006/07 at the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature on Monday 24 April 2006 at 9am.

In his budget speech MEC Cele is expected to give a report on the achievements and progress of both departments in working towards ‘defending the weak’ in the past financial year and furthermore outline challenges ahead that are facing departments particularly budget constraints.

Unveiling of the Road Safety Easter Campaign 2006 by MEC
Tuesday 04 April - Westridge Park (Durban) at 9am


KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele will unveil the Road Safety Easter Launch of 2006 that will be divided into a series of events that will include the WALK FOR SAFETY for a distance of 5km from Westridge Park in Durban-Mayville at 9am to the Warwick Triangle and finally Curries Fountain for a Prayer for Road Safety.

This year’s launch will start with a CALVACADE and WALK FOR SAFETY to the Warwick Triangle where the MEC and members of the religious fraternity will lay the wreaths in memory of the 10 people who were killed in the horror crash at the Warwick Triangle on Tuesday 31 January 2006.

 The cavalcade drive will move from Umlazi /Pinetown and KwaMashu; they will all meet at Spaghetti Junction and travel in the convoy to the Warwick Triangle and to Curries Fountain for the Prayer for Road Safety. The Cavalcade will include vehicles from Metro Police, RTI, Fire Extinguishers and the Netcare Crew.

Campaign to Stop Violence Against Women

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele will attend a campaign to stop violence against women. This is a national campaign that seeks to address all issues relating to the well being of women. The campaign will begin with a convoy for Awareness Drive through the CBD.

KwaZulu Natal Department of Community Safety and Liaison under the leadership of MEC Bheki Cele will be the proud hosts of the 2nd International Association of Chiefs of police (IACP) Sub-Saharan Executive Policing Conference in Durban International Convention Centre on the 26-28 March 2006.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sbu Ndebele will officiate the opening of the Conference on Monday 27 March 2006, at 8am at the Durban ICC. Safety and Security Minister Charles Ngqakula will be the guest on honour in the conference that will be attended by delegates and chiefs of police in the Sub-Saharan Region.

Operation Thath'Iskorokoro Targets Empangeni Region

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport highly acclaimed Operation Thath’iskorokoro will tomorrow target Empangeni region which is the biggest region of the department of transport. The operation will commence at 6h30 after a briefing that will be held at Empangeni RTI Offices in Ngwelezane Road.

Operation Thath’iSkorokoro is joint operation between Operation Shanela, SAPS, RTI and a team of Technical Compliance Officers. It was officially launched by the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele last week Thursday 16/03/06 during the Bus Indaba in Pietermaritzburg.

 
FEBRUARY
Sunday 26 February 2006, M Section Hall – Umlazi at 10 am

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele will visit Umlazi and Dassenhoek on Sunday 26 February as part of the “Defending the weak” projects.

MEC Cele will officially open the pedestrian bridge crossing over railway line at Umlazi M section and thereafter proceed to the SOD Turning of M10 Pedestrian Bridge and MNR Taxi Rank at Umlazi. The above projects have been requested by the community and their existence will improve the lives of ordinary people particularly children.
Izwelibomvu Sports Ground (Near KwaNdengezi-Pinetown)
Sunday 26 February 2006, at 12 pm

At 12pm MEC will proceed to a road opening of P489 at Izwelibomvu outside Pinetown. Main road P489 which 11.2 km form parts of the provincial access roads programme and is one of the huge infrastructure projects in the area with a total budget of R 13. 7 Million.

The road construction has created employment opportunities to the local people particularly youth. After the construction of P489 communities around Izwelibomvu have been able to access basis services including clinics and schools.

The Seven Road Accident Victims Were Killed In A Horrific Taxi Crash That Occurred On The P291 Road In Steildrift Outside Newcastle. The Taxi Was Carrying 21 Passengers On Board Travelling From Danhauser To Madadeni.
 
MEC Cele to Host Memorial for 8 People Killed in a Horror Crash

KwaZulu- Natal MEC for Transport, Community and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele will attend a memorial service for 8 people killed in a horror crash on Tuesday morning in Durban’s Warwick Avenue. Initial reports have revealed that a truck lost control and knocked a number of vehicles including two taxis and pedestrians.

MEC Cele’s Report Back on Safety and Security over the Festive Season

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele will give a comprehensive report back on issues of safety over the festive season particularly on the effectiveness of the highly advanced CCTV Cameras. Cele will give an update on crime statistics from Metro Police and SAPS over the festive season. Reports have shown that there has been an increase in arrests made through an assistance of CCTV Cameras.
