The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Mr. Michael Mabuyakhulu on behalf of MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, will be opening road P235 in Nongoma. Main Road P235 is located from Somkele to Hlabisa in Empangeni. Construction of P235 consisted of upgrading 60.8 kilometres of gravel to blacktop. P235 serves the local and surrounding communities of Nongoma and Hlabisa by providing access to Hluhluwe / Mfolozi Game Reserves and several schools in the area. The total cost for the construction of P235 once complete will be R336.7 million. |

10 December 2010 at the Traffic Training College : Passing Out Parade of Newly Appointed Traffic Officers
The Acting MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo will honour newly appointed traffic officers in a passing out parade. A total number of 15 students comprising of RTI officers and Municipal Officers, which makes an 80% pass rate will be given official authority to enforce the law on our roads. With the festive season that has begun, these newly appointed officers will aid in tightening law enforcement throughout the province. |

13 November 2010 at the Uitvaal Stadium, Ladysmith commencing at 09:00 : Shova Kalula Bicycle Programme Rollout
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, together with MEC for Education, Senzo Mchunu will roll out the Shova Kalula Bicycle Programme by donating bicycles to rural schools in Uitvaal, Ladysmith. The programme is aimed at promoting non-motorized transport and was designed after a Rural Mobility Study which found that over 50% of work trips in rural areas are made by foot and 85% of learners walk long distances. The programme is aimed at improving mobility for all sectors within rural communities. |

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will attend the Zibambele Graduation Ceremony for 163 learners who have undergone the Construction Contractors Learnerships for NQF Level 2 and 4. Of the 163 learners 130 are from Zibambele Programme and 33 are from other Construction projects. The Department entered into these learnerships in 2008 and the programme is done through CETA which provides training. Learners have acquired skills necessary for their construction work. |

21 October 2010 at Gomane-Willow Crossing, Impendle : Road Opening of P127
MEC for Transport Community Safety Mr. Willies Mchunu will be opening road P127 in Impendle as one of Transport Month’s Projects.
P127 links Impendle and Himeville, where the existing gravel road is being upgraded to blacktop. In the 2010/2011 financial year approximately R20 million will be spent on this project. The upgrade will improve access to the existing four clinics and twenty four schools. This road is an important bus route that links several locations around Impendle, Underberg and Himeville. The upgrade will attract traffic from the Eastern Cape, Kokstad, Bulwer and the Natal Midlands. The total length of the road is 61km with an estimated budget of R370 Million. |

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate at the launch of Operation Hlasela for the Mooi River area on 7 October 2010. Operation Hlasela is a program aiming at pulling all stakeholders together in the fight against crime, and forms part of government’s roll-out of a “Building a United front against crime” campaign, which was launched on the 21st January 2010. Rural communities already under a huge yoke of poverty often have to bear the brunt of series of attack and killing of farm workers and farm owners as it has happened in the area recently. The seriousness of this matter has prompted government to classify this as a priority crime. |

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will launch the KZN Transport month. He is also expected to unveil series of activities to take place during the month of October including multi-disciplinary road blocks to take place through out the month.
Transport Month is a government initiative aimed at creating awareness in matters of road safety, promoting the usage of Public Transport and fast tracking infrastructure development particularly in rural areas. October was declared Transport Month in 2005.
MEC Mchunu will unveil the number of operations aiming at reducing fatalities on our roads as we are approaching the festive season’
The theme for this year’s Transport Month is “Transport: moving South Africa to do more together” |

The AEC is fitted with the latest equipment to accurately detect a driver’s blood alcohol level through a single breath sample. |
