MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will hold an urgent Indaba with taxi drivers, owners and driving school instructors. The programme is aimed at creating and enhancing awareness on road safety matters. The programme will have two sessions, one in the morning at 9H00am with taxi drivers and the second session in the afternoon at 13H00 for driving instructors. |

04 November 2011 commencing at 07:00 : Peace Walk in Durban and Launch of Operation Val’ingozi
KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will together with Popcru leadership, RTI commanders, leadership of the SAPS and the Taxi industry, lead a peace walk for the first time together at the Durban CBD. This walk aims at creating awareness on the spate of road accidents clouding the province recently and seeks to galvanize people of KZN behind the provincial road safety plan. The partnership between Popcru and the department will also tackle the scourge of police killing in the province.
The walk will culminate into the launch of Operation Val’ ingozi which is a partnership between government and all road users.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will attend the official sod turning for the Jiyane River bridge. The Jiyane River Bridge over the Buffalo (Umzinyathi) River will be constructed in the Amajuba District Municipality, under the eMalangeni Traditional Council and the iNkosi Nkosi. It will serve the Dannhauser Local Municipality and have approximately eighty five (85) meters. The bridge will create an all weather access route from the community residing on the northern side to Ekuhlakanipheni School and crèche on the southern side of the river. |

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will attend the sod turning of D9 Jozini. D9 is situated in KZ272 under the Jozini Local Municipality, in the Sqakatha Traditional Council, under iNkosi Gumede. This road will assist the Sqakatha-Makhathini communities, providing access to the local amenities. This road is expected to cost R58.82 million. |

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, on behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal Government led by the Honourable Premier Dr. Zweli Mkhize, will together with the IEC and political parties host a prayer rally to acknowledge and to give thanks for peaceful local government elections and tolerance after the local elections. During the election, the people of KwaZulu-Natal demonstrated maturity and respect for our democratic values. This prayer rally aims at deepening political tolerance and stability in the province. |

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will attend the Memorial service of 10 people who died on the N2 tomorrow. This accident happened last week (19 September, 2011) at about 18h30 when a taxi travelling from Durban to Mtubatuba collided head-on with a bakkie on the N2. Ten people died on the scene and four were critically injured and taken to the Ingwelezane and Richards Bay Hospitals to receive medical attention.

27 September 2011 at Esikhawini College (FET) commencing at 09:00 : Launch of the Red Spots Traffic Unit
In an attempt to reduce road fatalities, the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will launch a new traffic unit responsible for areas frequently experiencing fatalities and road accidents in KwaZulu-Natal. The Red Spots Unit is made up of experienced senior members from Special Operations who are equipped to execute their duties effectively. MEC Mchunu will also launch an early start of the festive season road safety campaign. This will see a festive season launch moving away from its tradition launch in December. When December comes, the Department wants to be accessing an output so that it is clear on areas that need attention and need to be strengthened. All these activities will be held at a mass prayer to remember road accident victims called Healing of the Wounds. |

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will attend the Memorial service of the 10 people who died in Mkhuze tomorrow (8 September 2011). The MEC is expected to be accompanied by the families of the deceased, interfaith leaders, Community Road Safety Councils, Representatives from the Road Accident Fund, the local and district Mayors and the Community of Bhambanana. The accident happened on 3rd September 2011 on the N2 north bound. It is believed that the minibus lost control and hit a tree. Eight people died on the scene and two later died in Bethesda Hospital. |

16 August 2011 at the Durban ICC commencing at 08:00 : Provincial Summit on Police Killings The Province of KwaZulu-Natal through the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr T.W. Mchunu, has called for a Provincial Summit on Police Killings to be held on 16 August 2011 at the ICC.
The main objectives are to identify the root causes of police killings and to mount a concerted response to the problem. The summit will draw on a wide spectrum of sectors and stakeholders including, but not limited to the Public Protector, Police leaders from National and provincial governments, Metro Police, RTI, Legal Professionals, Community Police Forums, JCPS Cluster members and other important stakeholders from both the community and government. |

Mchunu will attend this funeral as part of government to celebrate the heroism demonstrated by Mr. Duma. 11 July 2011 at 9 West Central Arterial over the road from Hillside Smelter commencing at 11:00 : Opening of John Ross Intersection in Richards Bay
KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will officiate the opening of John Ross Intersection in Richards Bay. This is a public–private initiative between the Department of Transport in the province and BHP Biliton Aluminium SA. The project alone cost more than R75 million. The John Ross/West Central Arterial intersection has always been extremely congestive and the new overpass link road will certainly improve the safety of road users, particularly as harbour bound traffic will no longer cross the John Ross Highway. |

In a bid to end violent protest that erupted over the taxi fare in KwaDukuza, the KZN MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu will hold a meeting with the local taxi association in a bid to calm the taxi unrest in the area. This comes after the aggrieved set alight the house of a police officer in the area. These protests happened after the taxi association in the area increased commuter fare. |

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate at the sod turning of road P296 and upgrading it to blacktop. He is also expected to distribute bicycles to local Schools at Dannhauser. The upgrading of P296 will commence from km 24 at the Intersection of P38 (Jokisi) to Km 56 at the intersection of P34/2 (Tayside). The schools in the area include Moy Primary School, Cooper Primary School, Lengola Secondary School, Nyanyadu Primary School, Malambule Secondary School, Ingabade High School, Okhalweni Primary School and Battersea Park Primary School. The Millford community will benefit most from this project. The project will have a huge impact in the local community for economic of social and developmental purposes as it will create over 500 job opportunities. |

16 May 2011 at the Kufanelesibonge High School Sports Ground commencing at 09:00 : Opening of the Matshana Local Road and Ntshunguze Local Road
KZN Head of Transport Mr. Chris Hlabisa will officiate at the opening of two roads (Matshana and Ntshunguze) at Qhudeni- Nquthu.
Matshana Local Road is situated in the Nquthu Local Municipality where 4.40 kilometres of earthworks, gravelling and drainage took place at an approximate cost of R1.20 million. The construction of Matshana road allows the community access to Matshana Primary School and Thengeduze Store Clinic. This project was completed in December 2010. As part of the project, the Matshana Road, of length 7km (gravel road) was also constructed, linking the community of Esizindeni to D1566 and providing access to Matshana, Ntabesibahle Primary and Fanelesibonge High School at a total cost of R6.9 million creating 8 job opportunities. Lastly as part of the project, the Ntsunguze Road, of length 9,1km (gravel road) was constructed, linking the communities of Ntsunguze and Gwija and providing access to Ntsunguze,Gwija primary and Qhobo High school at a total cost of R4,5 million creating 8 job opportunities. |

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate the opening of road P368/373 at Msinga (Sinyameni).
P368 is 26.0 km in length, where 5.0 kilometres has been upgraded from gravel to blacktop and a further 5.7 km has been regravelled up to selected layers. The road provides access for the community to the Mbangweni Clinic and eight Schools. This road is estimated at R40 million creating 64 job opportunities. P373 is 38.0 kilometres in length, and the Department is currently busy with earthworks and layer works of 4.5 kilometres and three major culverts. Construction of the 4.5 kilometre section will be surfaced by the end of June 2011. Main road P373 is located in the uMzinyathi District Municipality under Inkosi Mchunu and Inkosi Mthembu. A total budget of R15 million has been spent to date creating 60 job opportunities. The road provides access for the community to the Mahlangana Clinic and fifteen Schools. |

KZN MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu and the IEC, in a bid to promote political tolerance and an atmosphere conducive to free and fair elections, will be jointly leading the first multi-party prayer meeting in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. This prayer rally will see all political parties and independent candidates, contesting local government elections, sharing a stage and jointly addressing the people of this province. For the first time people will be also encouraged to wear their political T/shirt to demonstrate tolerance amongst people of KwaZulu-Natal. |

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate the sod-turning of road P17 and Ingubevu vehicle bridge as part of the service delivery to people initiative. Main Road P17 is located between Greytown and Ngubevu in the Umzinyathi District. It serves as the main access road for the communities from the Inadi (situated at km 34.0) and Ngubevu (situated at km 52.3) districts respectively. P17 serves the Inadi and Ngubevu communities by providing access to the Tugela Ferry Hospital, the Ehlanzeni and Ngubevu Clinics, six schools and three community churches and a community hall. |

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will unveil the Road Safety Easter Holiday Campaign for 2011 under the theme “Accidents do not happen, they are caused”. Mchunu is expected to outline series of events to take place throughout the whole Easter Holiday to ensure compliance on the roads. KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate the opening of road P240 in Mlalazi. This road provides access to eleven schools, tourism facilities and other public amenities. The total length of this road is 27.4km and it has only recently been completed. The construction started during the 2003/2004 financial year, and includes 3 major bridges, 4 large culverts and was completed in 2010/2011 financial year. The total cost of this road is R254 million and it created 1467 job opportunities for locals and has also imparted sustainable skills that will enable them to work even after the project has ended. |

07 April 2011 at the Pholani Sports Ground, Lindelani : Memoria Service for Nine Killed in Lindelani Collision
KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will tomorrow attend a memorial service of nine victims killed in a horrific accident involving two minibuses which collided head-on at Lindelani last weekend. Preliminary reports reveal that a minibus which was travelling towards Pinetown collided head on with another minibus which was heading towards Lindelani, leaving four people dead on the scene, one on the way to hospital and four more victims have died after receiving medical attention in Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital and King Edward Hospital, the fourth person being a still-born. The driver who was travelling towards Pinetown was charged with culpable homicide and reckless driving. |

The Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate the opening of Road D518 and P549 in Greytown. District Road D518 is located in Eshane, near Ahrens, Greytown under iNkosi Sithole. It serves the Eshane and Ahrens communities by providing desperately needed access to several schools and clinics. D518 is 9.6km in length and 6m wide. The surfacing of the road was severely distressed, resulting in a total state of disrepair. The project comprised of the rehabilitation of the 9.6 km of D518. The project has been successfully completed at a cost of R15.22 million, thus providing a safe access for the local community of Eshane and Ahrens. The MEC will also officiate the opening of Road P549 in Ahrens. This road serves the Ahrens community by providing access to schools, clinics and the sugar and timber industry by providing a haulage route to access the main areas of Greytown and Kranskop. 12 km of this road was completed in 2006. A further 3 km was carried out in the 2010/2011 financial year, creating 55 local job opportunities and employment of 20 Zibambele workers. |

The Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate the opening of Road P499 which is located in KwaMbonambi. P499 is located in Kwambonambi and Dondotha, in the Uthungulu District under iNkosi Mthethwa. P499 is 14.27 km in length including a 1.78 km link of P497 which provides the Dondotha community with access to KwaMbonambi and N2, and to date 5 km is complete. The road provides access to four high schools and three primary schools. It also provides access to Dondotha Clinic, KwaMbonambi Police Station, Dondotha pension points and agricultural land. These projects have also provided local community members with jobs and also imparted skills that will enable them to sustain their lives upon completion of this project. The total cost for upgrade for this phase is R91 million, creating 340 job opportunities. |

KwaZulu Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will present his budget speeches for the financial year 2011/2012 at the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Legislature. Mchunu is expected to give a report back on the success of both his departments’ operations. Furthermore, he will give a report on the achievements and progress of both departments (Transport and Community Safety) in the past financial year and also outline challenges ahead that are facing departments. The budget speech will continue to expand on issues on road safety, as 2011/2012 is marked as the year of Activism, under the theme “Activism Against Road Carnage and Transgression”. KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu will officiate the opening of the Wela Vehicle Bridge at uLundi. The main aim for this construction was to assist the community after it was reported that during one of the heavy rains people were washed away, drowned while crossing the low level crossing at the time. The structure serves about 200 households around the area daily.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu will officiate the opening of Bhanya River Bridge in Vryheid. This bridge is located in Bhekuzulu Township under Abaqulusi Local Municipality in Zululand District Municipality. The bridge was constructed to link kwaBhanya, Bhekuzulu, Emathrihandredi, KwaNyosi and KwaBoyana communities and also to eliminate the risk of the community drowning in the river as they use the route as a short cut to access Vryheid. The bridge is 37.6 m long and 11m wide. Four emerging contractors benefited and 155 job opportunities were created. The total budget of the Project is R12, 741,447.09. |
