08 December 2012 at the Tugela Toll Plaza commencing at 09:00 : Launch of New Public Transport Enforcement Initiative to Curb Road Carnages

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, in partnership with the leadership of SANTACO in KZN will launch the festive season road safety campaign. This partnership is basically aimed at ensuring compliance with the law and road standards by public transport and ensuring safety of its commuters and other road users.

06 December 2012 at the Traffic Training College commencing at 09:00 : Graduation of Trainee Road Traffic Officers 2012

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu addressed the graduation of 11 new traffic officer who have undergone training at the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Pietermaritzburg. The 11 new traffic officers were for a period of a year, studying a Diploma in Traffic Management and they have undergone intensive training. They are from various municipalities, Hibiscus Coast, KwaDukuza and Ingwe municipalities for example.

02 December 2012 at the Sports Grounds near Ekuvukeni Police Station commencing at 09:00 : Healing of the Wounds (Ladysmith)

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, will remember the road accident victims in Ladysmith. This ‘Healing of the Wounds’ remembrance day will serve as a vehicle for the department to preach the gospel of peace during the festive season and beyond. This is governments’ way of showing the community and the families of the deceased that their loved ones are gone but not forgotten.

 
NOVEMBER

30 November 2012 at Edibhini, Mtubatuba commencing at 09:00 : Cleansing Ceremony

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will witness the historic cleansing of the two warring factions under KwaMakhwanazi clan in Mtubatuba. The two factions, eMachibini and eSiyembeni have been at each other’s throats for many years in what is believed to be the faction fights. Many people lost their lives and schooling was adversely affected in 2010 and 2011. Following the intervention made by MEC Mchunu, the Mkhwanazi clan and the police, the situation started to normalize. For the past two years, people of the two factions have been living in peace and harmony. Tomorrow they will be burying all the ugly deeds of the past and opening a new chapter of peaceful co-existence.

29 November 2012 at the KZN Legislature (Chamber) : Presentation of Road Safety Plan to Curb Road Carnages

With the festive season around the corner, KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will present a concrete plan to curb road carnages in KwaZulu Natal. Mchunu will table a report which incorporates statistics for road accidents and fatalities for the year 2012. This plan will tomorrow be debated by members of the legislature. The plan includes the roll out enforcement strategy by the department of Transport working with other law enforcement agencies.

22 November 2012 at Emlazi Cycle stadium (Next to Mangosuthu Technikon) commencing at 09:00 : Memorial Service for 7 who died in N2 Ezinqoleni Collision

ACTING HOD for Transport Mr. Sbu Gumbi will tomorrow, Thursday (22 November 2012) attend the memorial service of seven people who passed away in a horrific road accident on the N2, Ezinqoleni.

Reports reveal that on Saturday (17 November 2012) at about 21:15 a Toyota Hi Lux was travelling on the N2 from Umlazi to Umtata to a funeral when it met with an accident. It is believed that due to the wet road, the driver lost control and veered onto the right side of the road, it flipped and ejected all persons from the vehicle and landed on its roof.

22 November 2012 at eZibomvu next to Esiyalwini Primary (eDumbe) commencing at 09:00 : Sod Turning of P271 Dumbe

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will tomorrow, Thursday (22 November 2012), fulfil the promise of providing black top road to the community of Dumbe by officiating a sod turning for the upgrade of the remaining gravel section of P271.

P271 is 25.8km in length and is a main road. It will provide the community of Paul Pietersburg access to places of need such as the Hartland Provincial Clinic. The first phase was 11.7 km was upgraded from gravel to black top. The department of Transport will now cover the remaining 14.1km from gravel to blacktop. This road will cost a staggering amount of R22 million and will create 250 employment opportunities for the community.

25 September 2012 at Skikishela, Mtubatuba commencing at 09:00 : Sod Turning of the Lower Nyalazi River Vehicle Bridge

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu will officiate the sod-turning ceremony of Lower Nyalazi River Vehicle Bridge at Nkovukeni in Mtubatuba. This bridge will provide all year, all weather safe access for the communities of Mpukunyoni to Madwaleni and Mpukunyoni Clinics as well as for scholars to Bhelebane, Bongubuhle, Madwaleni, Shikishela Nkosana and KwaMnandi Schools.

22 September 2012 at Okhombe Primary School Grounds, Bergville commencing at 08:00 : Mass Funeral for 10 Primary School Children

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will accompany the families of the ten (10) primary school pupils who lost their lives, in a gruesome accident last weekend, to a mass funeral. It is alleged that on the 15 September 2012 nine (9) learners were killed when a minibus they were travelling in, tried to avoid a cow that was crossing the road. The driver lost control and veered into a river nearby. One was later found in the river which made a total of 10 learners who lost their lives. Six (6) learners were admitted at Ladysmith Hospital and later released.

08 September 2012 at Malengeni High School Sports Ground, Umzinto commencing at 09:00 : Mass Funeral for Accident Victims of P100 Collision

A delegation from the KZN Department of Transport, will accompany mourners to a mass funeral tomorrow, as they bid farewell to their loved ones who passed away in a gruesome accident. This accident happened on the 31st of August 2012 at about 14H30 when a bus travelling along the P100 from Ndwedwe to Umzinto left the road and overturned after the driver lost control on a bend. The bus was carrying 62 learners from eMalangeni High School. Four learners died on the scene and 3 other learners later died in hospital. The department of Transport’s acting HOD, Mr. Sbu Gumbi is expected to lead the delegation and will be accompanied by the senior department officials, religious leaders, RRTF members, CRSC members, and the family of the victims and the members of the community.

04 September 2012 at the Olive Convention Centre, Durban : KZN Government to Host Provincial Taxi Indaba

KwaZulu-Natal Government, led by the Honorable Premier Dr. Zweli Mkhize, will host a one day Provincial Taxi Conference to discuss instability in the taxi industry. The Taxi Indaba follows a decision taken by the cabinet after receiving a report from MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu on instability that is currently engulfing the taxi industry in the province. Mchunu’s report sensitized the Cabinet on issues adversely affecting the taxi industry but in the main it raised concerns over the on-going killings of taxi operators. The main purpose of this Indaba is to afford all role players an opportunity to engage constructively in ensuring that taxi industry is a viable and peaceful business.

31 August 2012 at the Ndumo Stadium (Jozini) commencing at 09:00 : Sod Turning Of Ntabayengwe Pedestrian Bridge and opening of Bhekabantu and Munywana Pedestrian Bridges

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. TW Mchunu will officiate at the sod turning of the Ntabayengwe Pedestrian Bridge and opening of the Bhekabantu and Munywana Pedestrian Bridges.

23 August 2012 at Bhekuzulu Hall, University of Zululand, Ongoye commencing at 13:00 : Multi-Party Oversight Committee

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison is expected to lead a Multi-Party Oversight Committee delegation to the University of Zululand, Ongoye campus with the purpose of hosting a student’s dialogue to address matters of a political nature that have been known to cause disruptions to the university’s programmes.

The main purpose behind the visit will be to have a dialogue with the students about ushering in peace amongst different students formations and clarifying the roles that each must play in the fight against violent skirmishes and crime that is plaguing the institution. It is also intended to create a culture of tolerance among students no matter their background. As such, incidents that have been widely reported concerning intolerance within the institution will be addressed as well.

18 August 2012 at Emthaleni (Qiniso Sports Grounds) commencing at 09:00 : Mass Funeral for 7 People Killed in Pomoroy

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu has assigned a high level delegation on behalf of the provincial government to attend the mass funeral of 7 people killed in Pomoroy. The delegation will be led by the Legislature Portfolio Chairperson for Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Bheki Ntuli to the funeral tomorrow. Seven (7) people killed were members of the community crime fighting organization, iSikebhe. They were ambushed last week on their mission to recover stolen cattle. They were all shot and killed in the area of eMahlaba outside uMsinga.

16-17 August 2012 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, Durban : Cross Border Crime Summit

In a bid to reduce escalating crime levels across provincial borders, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government will host a two-day provincial cross border crime summit in Durban.

The summit seeks to create a platform to share ideas and strategies, in partnership with neighbouring provinces and neighbouring countries on improving security and control of the borders, thus reducing crime levels. The summit will look at the trends and all forms of criminal activities happening on the borders or using borders. Delegates from neighbouring countries, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho will be participating in this summit.

 
JUNE

12 June 2012 at ISonkombo Grounds commencing at 09:00 : Sod Turning of Road P714 at Ndwedwe

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate a multimillion project at the sod turning ceremony of P714 road at Ndwedwe falling under the Ilembe Municipality. P714 road will benefit a number of schools surrounding the Ndwedwe Municipality and the small businesses located along the route as it provides direct access to and number of schools and clinics and will spread it length. The construction of this road will cost over R305 million and will create a number of jobs. The construction of this road will commence on the 18th of June 2012 and it is anticipated that the project could be completed within 4 years by 2015/2016 financial year.

 
MAY

31 May 2012 at the KZN Legislature commencing at 09:00 : Budget Speeches for the Departments of Transport and Community Safety and Liaison

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will outline how both his departments plan to use the given budget. Under the Department of Transport, he will outline the ways of spreading infrastructure development particularly in the rural areas and ways to create employment opportunities. He will also outline ways to curb deaths on our roads under this year’s theme “Deepening Activism against road carnages”. Later he will also deliver his budget speech for the Department of Community Safety and Liaison where he will explain his plans to fight crime and anti-police killing campaign under the theme “Deepening people’s action against crime”.

15 May 2012 at Mondlo (Vryheid): Official Opening of 20 new Public Transport Shelters

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will officially open new 20 Public Transport Shelters in Mondlo (Vryheid). This infrastructure project will benefit public transport users by providing them a shelter at a taxi rank. This multi-million rand initiative is in line with the Department of Transport’s drive to improve road and transport infrastructure in the province. The main objective of this facility is to provide decency and to protect public transport users in all-weather conditions whiles creating jobs to unemployed youth.
15 May 2012 at Abaqulusi Municipality commencing at 09:00: Walk for Safety at Vryheid

MEC Mchunu is also going to join a walk for safety by the Vryheid local community against crime and police killings tomorrow morning. The walk will begin from Abaqulusi Municipality to iKhethelo sport ground.

24 April 2012 at KwaSangweni Sports Field (uMzumbe) commencing at 09h00 : Two Vehicle Bridge Openings in uMzumbe

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will officially open two vehicle bridges built under the uMzumble Municipality. Mchunu will be accompanied by the leadership of Umzumbe Municipality, Ugu District Municipality and Traditional Authority for the official opening. The two vehicle bridges will change the lives of two communities as they will have better access to government facilities.

23 April 2012 at Nongoma (Nhlophekhulu) commencing at 13:00 : Mpanza Family Visit

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu sent a delegation led by the Acting HOD for Transport, Mr. Sbusiso Gumbi will today (23 April 2012) to visit the family of King Goodwill Zwelithini’s VIP protector, Thembinkosi Mpanza. On the 16th April 2012 at about 17h30 Mpanza was killed in an accident on the N3 at Mtubatuba while providing VIP protection services to King Goodwill Zwelithini.

23 April 2012 at Masinga Residence in KwaMangethe (Mandeni) commencing at 10:00 : Mass Funeral for Three School Children Killed

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will attend the mass funeral of the school children, who were ran over by a bakkie. It is alleged that on the 13 April 2012 at a about 07:30 a bakkie knocked over four primary school siblings on their way to school. Three died, and one sustained injuries and is recovering.
