21 December 2013 at Pongola- Mkhwakhweni (next to Khulumel’uZulu High School) commencing at 10:00 : Mass Funeral for 7 Killed in Crash in Mdonini

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will join mourners at a mass funeral on Saturday (21 December 2013) to bid farewell to the seven who died in a gruesome road accident which happened on the N2 in Mdonini near Pongola. Mchunu will be accompanied by the senior departmental officials, religious leaders, the families of the deceased and the community of Pongola. Media are invited to attend.

Mchunu to launch festive season safety plans, 06 December 2013

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, will on Friday (06 December 2013) unveil festive season plans to curb road carnages on the N3, Midmar- Howick KwaZulu-Natal. As part of the plan, MEC Mchunu will reveal measures of the Multi-Disciplinary Law Enforcement teams implement to proactively deal with road traffic transgressions during the busy holiday season.

01 December 2013 at eMagabheni Sports Field, Umkomaas commencing at 09:00 : MEC to attend funeral service of victims of SAPPI taxi accident

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, will accompany mourners as they lay to rest their loved ones after the gruesome accident that claimed 15 lives last week Friday (22 November 2013) at SAPPI (SAICCOR) factory on the P197 near uMkhomazi. The accident occurred when the taxi travelling from uMkhomazi to eMagabheni drove into the factory premises and collided onto a stationary delivery truck, killing 14 passengers on the scene. Another passenger succumbed to injuries this week.

 
NOVEMBER

28 November 2013 at the Legislature Chamber, Pietermaritzburg commencing at 12:00 : MEC Mchunu to Table an Executive Statement regarding Safety Issues on Fields Hill (M13)

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, will table to the KZN Legislature an Executive Statement with recommendations to address safety issues on Fields Hill (M13). As part of the Executive Statement, MEC Mchunu will highlight results of stakeholder consultations he embarked upon following the Pinetown accident that claimed 24 lives, as well as short and long term measures to address road safety on the M13.

24 November 2013 at the uMhlathuze Sports Grounds, Mhlathuze Village commencing at 13:00 : MEC Mchunu to Address Community Regarding Taxi Associations Dispute

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu will address the community of Ngwelezane and Mhlathuze Village outside eMpangeni, to report on government’s decision in resolving the long-standing dispute involving taxi associations. On Sunday, Mchunu will be reporting to both associations the outcomes of his investigations into which association is authorised to operate in the area after incidents of violence led to the suspension of taxi operations in the area that he will also share with the residents of UMhlathuze Village.

KZN Head of Department for Transport Mr. Sbu Gumbi will attend a memorial service in Vryheid, under the Zululand District Municipality, following a horrific crash that killed eight people on Saturday night on the R618 between Vryheid and Nongoma.

This prayer will be aimed at targeting the Zululand Municipality community in fighting against crime, drugs, and drought in the area.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate at the opening of the Mkuze River Bridge.

13 October 2013 at Mkhondeni Testing Grounds, Pietermaritzburg commencing at 09:00: Provincial Driver of the Year Competition

The Department of Transport will hold the Provincial Driver of the year competition in Mkhondeni, Pietermaritzburg this weekend (12-13 October 2013). The main purpose of the Driver of the Year Competition is to improve driving skills of heavy motor vehicle drivers (truck drivers). Drivers are tested on many levels including their skills behind the wheel, knowledge of road safety rules and regulations and the ability to spot safety hazards during a pre-trip inspection.

07 October 2013 at Emabhuqwini (Nkandla) commencing at 09:00 : Sod Turning of P-16 from Gravel to Blacktop

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu will officiate the start of upgrading P16 to black top in Nkandla under uThungulu District Municipality. P-16 has been identified as a strategic route for economic development, linking the people of Kranskop, Nkandla and Nquthu.

04 October 2013 at Shongweni : MEC Addresses Truck Owners at Shongweni Outdoor Expo

KwaZulu Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, called on the freight industry, mostly owners of truck logistics companies, to be active participants in the drive to ensure road safety. This was during his address to the Shongweni Outdoor Expo.

03 October 2013 in Pinetown : Official Launch of October Transport Month in KZN

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu will tomorrow, 03 October 2013, officially launch the Provincial October Transport Month by re-launching a multi-prong strategy focusing on heavies dubbed Operation Phezu’ kwabo at the Pinetown Civic Centre. He will also unveil a pilot project of the formation of a dedicated team to trace and apprehend traffic offenders who have outstanding warrants. The Traffic Fine Tracking Team has already started its work and has been successful in collecting many outstanding fines and has apprehended those who have failed to comply. The MEC is also expected to outline key activities for the October 2013 Transport Month calendar and highlight key successes since 2009.

 
SEPTEMBER

17 September 2013 at the KZN Legislature, Pietermaritzburg commencing at 11:30 : MEC to Table Executive Statement

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, will today (September 17, 2013) table a detailed report on issues and concerns raised by the community of Greater Pinetown regarding M13, Fields Hill, at the Legislature in Pietermaritzburg.

Mchunu will table the Executive Statement for debate by members of the provincial legislature detailing the response by government to address safety measures on the M13. Last week, MEC Mchunu together with MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, tabled at the Cabinet meeting a joint memorandum detailing the impact of road accidents in the province.

07 September 2013 at the Marian Ridge Sports Field commencing at 09:00 : MEC Mchunu and Pinetown Citizens Unite in a Fight against Social-ills and Crime

MEC Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu, in partnership with the Community of Pinetown South, will engage in a campaign against social ills and crime. The event will, among others, alert locals against the dangers of whoonga and other drugs, the dangers of buying items sold by criminals and how this promotes criminality. The event will start with a peace walk from the police station to Marian Ridge Sports Field. There will also be a distribution of information pamphlets to the community that will be done concurrent to the march.

07 September 2013 at the Sangweni Sports Ground (KwaHlongwa area at Mzumbe) commencing at 10:00 : Mass Funeral for Ten Bus Accident Victims

THE Provincial Government of KwaZulu-Natal led by Acting Premier, Senzo Mchunu together with the Zulu Royal Family will hold a mass funeral for ten people who died returning from the Annual Reed Dance (uMkhosi Womhlanga) last Sunday. The ten people died when the bus driver lost control and overturned on the R66 near eShowe. The ten who died includes eight young girls and two elderly women who were guardians of the girls who had participated at this year’s reed dance.

06 September 2013 at the Corner of Richmond Road and M13 Highway at 11:30 : Accident Site Viewing and Visit to Accident Victims of M13 Truck Crash

Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters and MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu will visit the accident scene in Pinetown today where more than 20 people died last night. Minister Peters and MEC Mchunu will then go view the wreckage site at the regional Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Pinetown. They will then visit the survivors of the horror crash at R.K. Khan Hospital. Finally, they will proceed to the Pinetown Council Chambers, where they will host a meeting with the families.

02 September 2013 at Nkwalini (R66 near Eshowe) : MEC to Visit Scene of Reed Dance Bus Accident and Family Members

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will visit the scene where a tragic bus accident killed 10 people who were returning from the Annual Reed Dance in Nongoma yesterday afternoon (1 September 2013). He will then proceed to the Eshowe Mortuary to meet with the families of the deceased to convey his condolences and to begin a process of identifying how government can assist the families who have lost their children. MEC Mchunu will brief media at the scene.

The KZN EPWP Provincial Co-ordination Team will be hosting an Indaba with the purpose being to aid the improvement of the EPWP implementation and reporting in all relevant public bodies in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.

25 August 2013 at Empangeni : Mass Funeral for Victims of a Collision on R34

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, will attend a mass funeral to mourn and bid farewell to five victims of a road crash that happened on the R34 outside eMpangeni.

22 August 2013 at the Venue: Queensburgh Civic Centre commencing at 08:30 : Participatory Education Techniques Regional Competition (Durban Region)

10 Schools representing the three Cost Centres namely Port Shepstone, Metro and Stanger will be participating at this competition. The schools will be adjudicated on their research presentation as well as research display. The schools placed first and second at this competition will then participate at the Provincial competition scheduled to take place in September.

18 August 2013 at the Ezihlabathini Sports grounds near iSizanotho Primary School (Melmoth) commencing at 09:00 : Healing of the Wounds

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, will attend the “Healing of the Wounds” remembrance ceremony for victims of road accidents on Sunday (18 August 2013). An initiative of the KZN Department of Transport, the ceremony is used to intensify public awareness on road safety and adherence to traffic regulations. Every year, remembrance ceremonies are held across the department’s Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Empangeni and Ladysmith regions to afford all communities an opportunity to remember their departed loved ones. On Sunday, MEC Mchunu will be accompanied by religious and local leadership in the ceremony which will be attended by the community of Melmoth and surroundings.

16 August 2013 at the Nqobuzulu Sports Ground: eMatheni commencing at 09:00 : Prayer Meeting for Ongoing Conflict in eMatheni Village, Nongoma

National Minister of Police, Mr. Nathi Mthethwa, Gauteng MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Faith Mazibuko and their KwaZulu-Natal counterpart, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, will host a prayer meeting to seek divine intervention in the ongoing conflict in eMatheni village, KwaNongoma. The prayer meeting comes in the wake of an ongoing conflict between communities of Matshamhlophe, Sigubudu and eMacekaneni.

15 August 2013 at the Hanavu Sports Ground, Entumbane commencing at 10:00 : Memorial Service for Accident Victims of Pongola Collision

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will attend the memorial service organised by the government in remembrance of the seven who passed away as a result of the Pongola bus accident. The bus accident occurred last week on the N2, about 15 kilometres from the northern KwaZulu Natal town. Six people had initially died when the driver lost control of the bus following a tyre-burst, resulting in it capsizing and hitting a wall, with a seventh dying in hospital this week.

10 August 2013 at EziMbokodweni : Funeral Service for Ndlovu Family Killed in Collision

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu attended and gave a speech at the funeral service of the 6 members of the Ndlovu family. The Ndlovu family were killed in a vehicular collision at Mgababa, with five members being burnt beyond recognition, and another family member dying later in hospital.

08 August 2013 at the Nsikeni Sports Ground, Umzimkhulu commencing at 09:00 : Sod Turning of P602

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, will announce a major, multi-million Rand road construction investment in uMzimkhulu on Thursday, 08 August 2013. At the same sod turning event, Mchunu will spell out plans of how the construction of Road P602, will link uMzimkhulu to neighbouring towns including Franklin, Kokstad and Creighton. The upgrade of the road network alongside the on-going revitalisation of uMzimkhulu will boost investment in the area and create hundreds of jobs for local people.

03 August 2013 at Umlazi Mega City

National Transport Deputy Minister, Sindiswe Chikunga will be visiting KwaZulu-Natal as part of the declaration by the United Nations of declaring a decade of action against road accidents. The Deputy Minister will be joined by members of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, representatives from the United Nations and the FIA foundation, and senior national and provincial government officials. The day will start off with a road block, there after the Deputy Minister and delegation will interact with pedestrians, commuters and taxi operators at a nearby taxi rank. The day will conclude with Deputy Minister Chikunga presenting the Zenani Mandela Road Safety Scholarship Award to recipient Ms. Samke Zulu in the KwaZulu-Natal province and endorse the award recipient officially as a Road Safety Ambassador. The ceremony will conducted jointly with the “Cycle Safety” initiative which forms part of the 365-days national road safety programme.

31 July 2013 MEC Willies Mchunu will attend the KZN Provincial Council on AIDS at the Grey’s Hospital Recreational Hall

Later in the day, the MEC will take part in the destruction of firearms at the Isipingo Reclamation Group Centre as part of the International Firearms Destruction.

30 July 2013 in the Utukhela District

MEC Willies Mchunu will attend the Department’s display at Public Service Career Week Exhibition being held at 5 SAI Military Base in the Utukhela District. Thereafter, the MEC will be attending the Umbilo Community Policing Forum (CPF) Annual General Meeting in Umbilo, Durban.

25 July 2013 at Khethelo High, Mondlo, Vryheid : Sod Turning of P258 Mondlo

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will officially launch the construction of road P258 linking the residential area of eMondlo with the town of Vryheid. This is part of government’s commitment to improve road infrastructure in rural communities and rural towns of KwaZulu-Natal. The construction on road P258 is essential in linking the community of eMondlo, under Abaqulusi Municipality, to important amenities like schools, health facilities and other economic activities.

18 July 2013 : MEC Mchunu’s Mandela Day Activities

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will be taking part in the following Mandela Day activities on 18 July 2013:

The MEC will commence activities by meeting with the Local Mayor and District Mayor at the Council Chamber, Town Hall at 09:00. At 09:30 the MEC and entourage will then proceed to the Driefontein Mathondwane Ward 08 to assist in the casting of the foundation slab for the Hadebe family.

At 10:30 the MEC and entourage will visit the Masibumbane Creche to handover Jojo tanks and to distribute toys.

At 11:00 they will proceed to Ezakheni Manzabilayo Ward 20 to assist in the casting of the foundation slab for the Kubheka family, and at 12:00 proceed to the Pieters Mbizeni Ward 08 to assist in the casting of the foundation slab for the Miya family.

16 July 2013 in the Uthukela District commencing at 09:00 : MEC Mchunu’s Activities as part of Mandela Week

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will be taking part in the following activities on 16 July 2013 as part of Mandela Week:

At 09:00 the Local Mayor will brief the MEC, MPL’s and the District Mayor at the Mayor’s Parlour at the Mnambithi Local Municipality.

The MEC and entourage will then visit the Moresteer Children’s Home in Ladysmith at 09:30, then proceed to Steadville for the erection of fencing of Gogo Hlatswayo’s house at 10:30.

Between 11:30 and 13:00 the MEC and entourage will proceed to the Acaciaville Sports Grounds for the feeding of the elderly.

 
JUNE

26 June 2013 at Evuna (Ekubuseni) near the tuck-shop KwaMdlalose commencing at 09:00 : Sod Turning of Vuna Vehicle Bridge

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will officiate at the sod turning of the Vuna Bridge and then assess other projects in the area. The Vuna vehicle bridge will assist the local residents to obtain easy access across the river to surrounding economies. It will also help school children when travelling to and from school by shortening the distance. It will increase traffic flows and create job opportunities to local residents who are unemployed, thus contributing to eradicating poverty in this rural community.

21 June 2013 at the Durban Botanical Gardens commencing at 09:00 : 1st South African Driving School Operators Association Conference

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, will address the first conference of the newly formed South African Driving School Operators Association at the Durban Botanical Gardens. After numerous consultations with different stakeholders regarding the irregularities that are apparent in the driving school industry there was a need to formalize so as to create a uniform approach for all operators.

06 June 2013 at Highflats commencing at 09:00 : Memorial Service for 8 killed in Head-On Collision

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu will be accompanying the families of the 8 accident victims of a head-on collision to their memorial service. The collision occurred on the R612 between Highflats and Ixopo last Friday afternoon (31 May 2013). A minibus travelling from Durban to Highflats with 11 occupants collided with a truck. Six (6) of the accident victims died on the scene and two later died at Christ the King Hospital.

25 May 2013 at the Ngcindezi School-Othweba area (Cato-Ridge) commencing at 09:00 : Funeral Service for Six Members of the Shange Family

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu will accompany the Shange family members as they lay to rest their six loved ones on Saturday, after they were killed in a gruesome accident last Friday (17/05/2013) afternoon. All six members of the Shange family died when their car collided head-on with a tractor on R603, Mbumbulu, South of Durban. The Shange family was travelling from Pietermaritzburg to Mid Illovo. The accident happened at around 19h00 last Friday.

24 May 2013 at the Ehlawini Stadium near KwaZokhulu Traditional Council at KwaMbonambi : Sod Turning of D887, P232 and handing over of P515

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu will officiate at the sod turning of roads D887 and P232 as well as the handing over of road P515. The KZN MEC for Education, District Champion, Mr Senzo Mchunu will be handing over houses to the community at this function.

21 May 2013 at the Blueways Country Lodge, Estcourt commencing at 10:00: National Minister and KZN MEC to Intervene in Ongoing Political Violence in Estcourt Area

A high level government delegation, including the Minister of Police Mr. Nathi Mthethwa and his KwaZulu-Natal counterpart, MEC for Transport ,Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, visit Estcourt, in the KZN Midlands, to intervene in the ongoing political violence that has engulfed areas around this town for almost two years now. After this visit, the two government leaders will brief members of the media on the way forward towards a lasting political settlement.

19 May 2013 at Othwebo, Cato Ridge commencing at 11:45: MEC Visits Shange Family to Pass Government’s Condolences

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu will today (19 May 2013) visit the Shange family to convey government’s condolences following the tragic death of six of their family members in a car accident. All six members of the Shange family died when their car collided head-on with a tractor on R603, Mbumbulu, South of Durban. The Shange family was travelling from Pietermaritzburg to Mid Illovo. The accident happened at around 19h00 on Friday. MEC Mchunu announced that a full investigation has been instituted into the cause of this accident.

13 May 2013 at Ntshawini Sports Ground commencing at 11:00: Interaction with KwaDukuza community regarding Public Transport Operations

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu, together with the leadership of KwaDukuza Municipality, will visit the area of Ntshawini, eThembeni and Groutville to report to the community on their request to have bus operations in the area. This follows the suspension of taxi operations in the area by the KwaDukuza Taxi Association, causing hardship for commuters in the area.

7 May 2013 at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site (Howick) commencing at 09:00 : Launch of Global Road Safety Week

The KZN Department of Transport will tomorrow (07/05/2013) launch the Global Road Safety week at the Nelson Mandela capture site. Learners from surrounding schools will walk to the site bearing road safety messages on signboards and presenting the Zenani Mandela Road Safety Banners on walking for safe roads. The road safety week will contribute to drawing attention to the need for pedestrian safety, generating action on measures which work to increase pedestrian safety.

2 May 2013 at KwaCeza Tribal Court commencing at 10:00: Memorial Service for Eight Pupils killed in Bus Collision

ACTING KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo join mourners at the memorial service of eight pupils who died in a gruesome bus accident last week. MEC Dhlomo is expected to address the memorial service on government interventions to curb road fatalities. Eight pupils died on R603 last week when a bus driver lost control and overturned. All learners were from Zamimpilo Special School. Last week MEC for Education Senzo Mchunu and Dr Dhlomo visited the accident scene and survivors of the accident in hospital.

30 April 2013 at Nelivali Sports ground in KwaMdakane commencing at 09:00 : Sod Turning for Mbabane River Bridge

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will officially do the sod turning for Mbabane river bridge. This bridge will assist people from the surrounding communities of Uitkyk-North, Uitkyk-South, Kilegethe, Nellieville, Imfundweni, Fairbreeze and the Mbabane communities by providing access to Kilkeel Higher Primary School, Emfundweni High School, Fairbreeze School, Siyawela Primary School, Khiphokuhle High School, eMbabane Primary School, Mziwethu High School, Kilkeel Farm Clinic and Emfundweni Clinic.

25 April 2013 at the Melmoth City Hall commencing at 09:00 : Memorial Service for Six who died in R66 Head-On Collision

Acting KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Dr. Sbongiseni Dhlomo will attend the memorial service of the six who died in a gruesome accident in Melmoth. Preliminary reports revealed that on 16 April 2013 at about 18h00 on the R66 a Mercedes collided head-on with a bakkie.

12 April 2013 at Vuma High School commencing at 09:00 : Opening of Thonyelani Pedestrian Bridge and Mnweni Vehicle Bridge, and Sod Turning of Ntshetheni Vehicle Bridge in Bergville

Through the infrastructure flagship programme Operation Shunquthuli, the Department of Transport will unveil three major infrastructure projects. KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will officially open two complete structures namely Thonyelani Pedestrian and Mnweni Vehicle Bridge. He will also officially launch the start of the construction of Ntshetheni Vehicle Bridge.

KZN Acting Premier, Mr. Willies Mchunu will outline the new framework and reviewed approach for the recruitment of Trainee RTI applicants tomorrow. The recruitment process was reviewed following the tragic deaths of seven applicants during the fitness test last year December in Pietermaritzburg.

09 April 2013 at the Mgwempisi Sports Grounds, Kwa-Cele commencing at 10:00 : Forum on Rape of Senior Citizens under the auspices of the Mazibuye Emasisweni Flagship Programme

Following the recent spate of rapes of senior citizens, the KZN government has set-up, for the first time, a forum where elders will engage with the youth and share ideas on how to end this disgusting social menace. The intention of this forum is to understand and unpack the dynamics which lead to this unacceptable criminal acts and unbecoming behavior. The strategic objective of this interaction is to develop mechanisms to protect elders in the communities and put an end to this scourge.

This programme will be launched on the South Coast, one of the areas which have experienced incidents of rape and abuse. This will be in line with the rolling-out of a campaign to fight crime in the area and to mobilize communities in the fight against crime and moral decline.

KZN MEC for Social Development, Weziwe Thusi and MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, House of Traditional Leaders and religious leaders, are expected to participate in this programme.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu will table key proposed solutions to end on-going taxi violence and killings in the province. Many parts of the province are experiencing serious tensions and division in the taxi industry which manifest itself through assassinations of prominent operators and instability.

Mchunu will address leaders of the taxi industry in the province on proposed solutions to end taxi violence and ensure peaceful co-existence in the industry. Mchunu is expected to share government’s approach and interventions in areas engulfed by violence and tensions.

In a bid to drastically reduce road carnages in KwaZulu-Natal, MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu is expected to announce a new strategy targeting accident hot-spots in the province. Mchunu will launch this new enforcement strategy during the early provincial Easter Holiday Road Safety Campaign.

15 March 2013 at Pomeroy Sport Ground commencing at 11:00 : Engagement with Stock Theft Warring Factions

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu will proceed to Pomeroy to engage two warring factions over stock theft. The people of eMahlaba and eMthaleni have been experiencing tensions following the incident where seven members of iSikebhe were shot and killed on their mission to recover stolen cattle. The intention of the engagement is to bring together these two groups for the first time to address issues of stock theft and crime in the area.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu will officiate the reconstruction of the Ngubevu bridge which was flattened by recent floods in uMsinga. The rains, which caused havoc and left a few deaths, also flattened the Ngubevu River Bridge, making it difficult for some communities to travel to major amenities such as schools , clinic and pension pay-out points.

Following the recent spate of rape incidents and abuse of woman and children, Mchunu is set to launch a provincial campaign to fight this ugly deed. The new initiative will be launched under the campaign of Khuzumhlola, which is aiming at mobilizing communities to be active in condemning violence and crime against woman and children.

26 January 2013 at the Blackburn Stadium in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg commencing at 09:00 : Mass Funeral for Seven who died in Head-On Collision

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Willies Mchunu together with other stakeholders will tomorrow accompany the families of seven victims that died in a gruesome accident that occurred in KwaMpumuza last Saturday (19/01/2013). Reports reveal that the two vehicles (VW Golf and VW Fox) collided head-on, at the intersection of P399 and D1131 in Mpumuza. Six occupants died on the scene, one on the way to the hospital and two sustained serious injuries. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Willies Mchunu together with the KZN Provincial Legislature will attend the memorial service of the eight people who passed away during the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) recruitment process held last month. The eight people passed away during the recruitment process held by the Department of Transport on the 27th and 28th December 2012 at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
