Traffic Camera Office
The Traffic Camera Office has been fully operational since February 2000 and
is responsible for the processing and administration of camera speed violations.
These camera speed violations as well as all other violations recorded by Road
Traffic Inspectorate officers are captured onto the Traffic Authority Management
Information System (Trafman) The Traffic Camera Office is the administrator and
custodian of the Trafman System and also provides training to all users.
During initial stages, images were obtained from spools as well as digital
images. Presently there are 14 Truvelo Combi devices supplying the Camera Office
with spool images. The digital equipment has increased to 4 Laser Cams as well
as 2 Digicams. The Department through a contractor also obtains digital images
from 3 Robot Digital Cameras. These cameras rotate between 10 strategically
positioned sites on the N2 and N3 in the Durban and Pietermaritzburg areas.
This is the first for the province, as these sites are permanent and unmanned
during operations. The advantages of these unmanned operations are twofold in
that it eliminates the risk to their safety that traffic officers face when
engaged in roadside activities as well as making them more readily available in
the quest for saving lives.
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (Trafman)
The Trafman System consists of 9 modules. Currently 4 of these modules are in
active use.
Traffic Contravention Module
All camera speed as well as manually recorded offences are captured onto this
module. The Traffic Contravention Module of the Trafman system handles all
administrative tasks from issuing a fine, prosecution or infringement notices to
generating warrants of arrest. It has extensive reporting and query facilities
to assist management.
Accident Monitoring Module
This module provides facilities to capture accident data for all accidents
within the province. An extensive range of accident analysis tools, are also
available.
Weighbridge Module
The enforcement software of this module controls the operation of 13 weigh
bridges and is used to monitor and control heavy motor vehicle overloading on
specific roads and routes in the province. REMOTE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM (Remcom)
The main purpose of the Remote Communication System (Remcom) is to provide
remote communication to Trafman. The system adds value at roadblocks by
identifying offenders with outstanding fines, summonses and warrants of arrest
and issuing these at the roadside. This is made possible by an online link to
the central server via a cellular communication network.
