Procedure When Applying for A Drivers Licence

  • Drivers Licences’ are in three categories–

 

a.

Motorcycles

Code A

- 18 years and older

 

Code A1

- 16 years and older

 

b.

Light Motor Vehicles

Codes B & EB

- 18 years and older

 

c.

Heavy Motor Vehicles

Codes C, C1, EC1, EC

- 18 years and older

  • An applicant needs to be in possession of a valid identity document and a valid learners’ licence when booking for his/her drivers test. The applicant needs to complete the green BL1/DL1 application form and pay the prescribed fee. The fees for the various categories are:
    • Code A &A1                           R220,00
    • Code B & EB                          R250.00
    • Code C1, EC1& EC                  R300.00

  • ? On the day of the test the applicant needs to bring with him, his valid learners licence, valid Identity Document, 4 ID-sized photographs and the prescribed fee for the issue of the drivers licence, which is R250. The applicant needs to undertake an eye test before undertaking this drivers test. N.B. Due to COVID you are encouraged to bring an eye test from an optometrist.

    If the applicant is successful he needs to have his/her fingerprints taken before applying for the card type drivers licence. The applicant is issued with a temporary drivers licence, which is valid for six months. Additionally, the applicant needs to provide proof of residence that is no older than 3 months old. The following are acceptable:

    Any utility account, for example, Electricity account; Water account; Sewage account; Refuse removal account.

    In the case where the utility account is not in the name of the owner, the person in whose name the utility account is issued must make an affidavit declaring that the owner resides at the address and the affidavit must be accompanied by the utility account of such a person.

    Other acceptable documents are:

    A bank statement; A recent lease or rental agreement; Municipal rates and taxes invoice; Telephone or cellular account; Valid TV licence; Recent long term or short term insurance policy document issued by an insurance company; A statement of account issued by a retail store.

    In the case of a person who resides at an informal settlement or rural area, applicants should bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming the postal and residential address; or a letter from the local tribal authority confirming the postal and residential address.

    The above documents must be either an original document or a certified copy thereof and must not be older than 3 months.
  • An applicant needs to uplift his temporary drivers licence on the same day as the test, failing which, he needs to undertake another test.
  • The applicant can track his/her card by sending their ID number to 33214, which will send back a message of the status of where the card is in terms of production or been returned for collection to the DLTC where the test took place. In order for applicants to collect his/her card they are are required to bring a valid identity document, ID Smart Card, temporary identity document or a valid temporary drivers licence to uplift their drivers licence card.
