How to
Apply for a Choice Number
The Costs
Choice Numbers process all applications throughout KwaZulu-Natal in respect of:
The purchase of Personalised and Specific Licence Numbers.
- The transfer of Personalised Licence Numbers.
- The re-allocation of Specific Licence Numbers that have been paid for.
- The re-allocation of system generated licence numbers that have not been paid for, subject to the timeous application (30 working days).
- The re-allocation of licence numbers allocated to stolen vehicles, subject to stolen vehicles being recovered

Personalised Licence Number
- Application can be made by completing an application form and emailing this to ChoiceNumbers@Kzntransport.gov.za or hand it in at the office.
- The turnaround time for the approval of a Personalised Licence Number is 21 working days from the date of receipt.
- The approval is then emailed to the applicant as per the information provided on the Application Form.
- The applicant then needs to go to their appropriate Registering Authority to make payment and allocate the personalised licence number to a motor vehicle.

Please take note that these fees do not include Registration and / or Licensing fees, and are subject to an annual increase.
Payments may be made by credit/debit card and cash at the Provincial Office (Pietermaritzburg) or at the appropriate Registering Authority.
What is a Provincial Personalised Licence Number?
A Provincial Personalised Licence Number Plate is a number plate consisting of blue characters on a white background, or black characters on a white background for public passenger carrying vehicles for reward purposes (taxis). The combination of numbers/letters shall not exceed 7 characters and shall be followed by the Provincial Coat of Arms, a hyphen and the letters ZN with the wording KwaZulu-Natal in small print at the bottom of the plate.

What is a Specific Licence Number?
A Specific Licence Number is normally referred to as a short digit licence number. The Department no longer sells these licence numbers. With effect from 1 December 2023, purchased Specific Licence Numbers must be replaced with a Personalised Licence Number of your choice and this include converting the same Specific Licence Number into a Personalised Licence Number at no cost, provided that it is available on NaTIS. The replacement has to be done by 30 November 2025.
Is the price to purchase a Personalised Licence Number a once-off fee?
Yes, if you purchase a Personalised Licence Number and it remains in your name.
Can I transfer my Licence Plate to another vehicle?
Yes, providing that the owner does not change.
