LEGAL ACTION AGAINST INDEPENDENT ON SATURDAY

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and ANC Provincial Chairperson, Sbu Ndebele has instituted legal proceedings against the 21 October 2000 issue of Independent on Saturday its lead story titled "Ministers owe millions".

The article falsely suggest that Minister Sbu Ndebele owes hundreds of thousands of rands in rent arrears for an official residence in Ulundi. Mr Ndebele's residence is in Durban.

The article and its presentation is untrue, defamatory and malicious.

"In as much as I have fought for and support the freedom of the press, I do not accept that the press has a prerogative to trample on the rights of individuals to their good name and reputation", Ndebele said.
