HIGH COURT UPHOLDS SUSPENSION OF VEHICLE EXAMINERS
Head of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, Dr Kwazi Mbanjwa,
has welcomed the decision of Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge, Judge Noel
Hurt to uphold the suspension of two Durban vehicle examiners.
The upholding of this suspension will send a clear message to all other
corrupt officials that their days are numbered. "We will continue to
crack down on fraudulent and corrupt practices and we urge the public to
supply us with any information. As we head into the festive season, this
is a sure reminder of our zero tolerance stance in our efforts to put an
end to the carnage on our roads." said Mbanjwa.
On the 27 May 2002, vehicle examiners Suraj Hiralall and Allan Richard
Browne who are both employed by GAP Testing and Road-worthy Centre in
Umgeni, Durban were suspended after an eight-month operation by the
provincial transport department and the SAPS, involving 35 officers, for
allegedly issuing fraudulent Certificates of Roadworthiness (COR’s).
The dismissal with costs comes after an application to prevent the
suspension of Hiralall and Browne was lodged with the High Court.
