ZERO TOLERANCE RECORDS 7 462 TRAFFIC OFFENCES

Traffic officials from the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) have charged motorists for 7 462 various traffic offences in the province since the start of the festive season on 1 December 2002.

Of this figure, 12 drivers were arrested for drinking and driving, 5 521 were charged for speeding, 176 for drivers’ licence offences, 651 for vehicle defects and 161 for overloading offences. 101 persons were charged for not wearing seatbelts and 33 vehicles were suspended for being in an un-roadworthy condition.

Meanwhile the road death toll in KZN has risen to 23 since the start of the festive season. Of this number, 5 were drivers, 8 passengers and 10 pedestrians.

Head of the Transport Department in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Kwazi Mbanjwa has warned motorists who have a blatant disregard for road rules that they will be caught and will face the full might of the law.

"We have been continuously bombarding road users with our road safety messages. However, where road safety education fails, we have another teacher in the form of law enforcement. This festive season we will continue working closely will all enforcement agencies and other relevant institutions to try and decrease this carnage on our roads," Mbanjwa said.

Visitors to KwaZulu-Natal will be able to better plan their trips this festive season thanks to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport’s official website that was launched last week.

Information that will be of benefit to motorists include hazardous locations, road construction sites, traffic updates, accident reports, weather reports and other relevant information to enable road users to ensure that they arrive safely and timeously at their destinations.
