FULL VERIFICATION OF PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT VEHICLE FLEET

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is currently performing a 100% verification of the provincial government vehicle fleet. The province currently owns a fleet of approximately 5 000 vehicles that are operated by the various government departments in KwaZulu-Natal. Vehicle inspection teams have been deployed throughout the province to perform inspections of these vehicles.

Vehicles are being inspected to:

  • Verify the details of each vehicle on the provincial asset register;
  • Verify the condition of each vehicle; and
  • Confirm the operating location of the vehicles.

This exercise is part of the annual audit of the provincial fleet implemented two years ago by the Department of Transport. It forms part of the Department of Transport’s commitment to good governance and effective systems of control. Detailed reports on the status of each government department’s fleet will be presented to each departmental head once the exercise has been completed. The department is also committed to combating fraud, abuse and misuse. Any such fraud, abuse and misuse will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with.

It is the responsibility of each government department to ensure that their vehicles have been presented to the teams for inspection. Vehicles not presented for inspection will be prohibited from use with effect from 1 April 2001 through a suspension of activities on their fleet management cards.

The provincial policy in respect of government vehicles states that such vehicles must have:

  • Registration numbers bearing the "KZN" prefix (e.g.) KZN 10000;
  • Departmental decals i.e. a sticker stating the name of the department that the vehicle belongs to;
  • Licence plates with red writing and a white background;
  • Licence plates must be pop riveted to the vehicle; and
  • Speedometer cables must be sealed.

The public is urged to report any alleged fraud, abuse and misuse to the Department of Transport on 0800 00 23 75 or (033) 355 8962.
