MHLUNGWANE IMBIZO RESULTS IN R3,7 MILLION ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Mr S’bu Ndebele visited the Mhlungwane community near Nqutu today as part of Imbizo Week and promised the residents of this area that road infrastructure projects costing approximately R3,7 million will commence as early as July this year.

There was joy and jubilation that broke into dancing and singing when Ndebele made this announcement. Minister Ndebele reiterated government’s commitment to access, energy and water. Present at the Imbizo were community members and community leaders including Inkosi Molefe, Hlathswayo and Mdlalose.

For a number of years the people of Mhlungwane and other surrounding areas were not able to access a number of critical social services. Many people, including about 700 learners, female teachers and old age pensioners have to cross the Mvoyane River to get to school and other services. The fact that this area experiences high rainfall during most of the year has exacerbated this situation. This river has already claimed the lives of several people from this community.

Minister Ndebele assured the residents that this situation would be rectified immediately with the building of a bridge over the Mvoyane River and the building of a road in the area.

Imbizo Week takes place from the 15th to the 21st April 2002. The purpose of Imbizo Week is to afford political champions an opportunity to visit their respective nodes in order to get first hand information of what the people of that particular node want. In this week, government intends to interact with the citizens of this country with a view to getting first hand information on the needs of the people.

The focus for Imbizo Week is on the Integrated Sustainable Rural Development (ISRDP) nodes. Minister Ndebele is the Provincial Political Champion responsible for the Umzinyathi District Council Node under which the Mhlungwane and surrounding areas fall.
