FORTHCOMING EVENTS
Members of the media are invited to attend the following forthcoming
events:
Friday, 23 August 2002 at 18h30: Prize-giving ceremony for the
provincial Driver of the Year Competition to be held at Port Academy
Auditorium, Port Training Academy, Langeberg Road (opposite Freightmax),
Bayhead, Durban.
The Driver of the Year competition is held annually to encourage heavy
motor vehicle drivers to accept greater responsibility for road safety, to
improve their standard of driving and to create positive spin-offs for the
companies who trust their drivers with these valuable assets. It is also
to reward companies that have allowed their drivers to participate in the
road safety programmes of the Transport Department. The competition is
conducted in the following three categories:
The overall winner of this competition will go on to compete in the
national finals to be held later this year.
Monday, 26 August 2002 at 09h30: Official Launch of the KZN Public
Transport Enforcement Unit (PTEU) at the YMCA hall, 1 Durban Road,
Pietermaritzburg.
Thirty-nine traffic officers of the KZN Department of Transport have
completed their specialist training course to deal with public transport
violence in the province, and the department now has a fully-fledged unit
dealing with the continuing fighting in the public transport industry.
Reliance can be placed on this unit by those in authority to carry out
dedicated and professional enforcement towards compliance, order, safety
and the promotion of orderly growth in the taxi and transportation
industries.
There are three main concerns that make this unit a necessity:
- On-going conflict in the industry;
- Discontentment of commuters; and
- Disorderly conduct of business.
These have all contributed to the tensions, which manifest themselves
as violence and which require the attention of a dedicated and specialist
unit. Recent attacks on passengers and taxi operators highlight the
importance of such a unit.
For this launch, media representatives will be allowed to accompany the
officers in the PTEU vehicles. Come and experience for yourself a ride in
one of these new, highly powered, law enforcement vehicles.
Tuesday, 27 August 2002 at 09h30: Official Opening of Road D2018 and
Ntenesha Bridge at Muden near Greytown.
The total cost of this project, which will provide much needed access
to the community of Muden, is more than R4 million.
All media are invited to attend. Please note picture
opportunities.
