NDEBELE PROMOTES THE SALE OF PERSONALISED PLATES TO FAST TRACK DEVELOPMENT

The funds generated from KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Mr S’bu Ndebele’s personalised licence number plate initiative has to date been used to build 55 bridges, provide access to 14 schools and 8 clinics as well as upgrade several roads in the province. Within 56 months since its inception, approximately R14, 9 million has been raised through the sale of personalised numbers. The average sales of personalised numbers in KwaZulu-Natal is R2, 3 million per annum and a 39% increase in sales has been reported with the introduction of seven character combination licence plates.

The Choice Numbers Section is an innovative division of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport’s Motor Licensing Bureau that markets and sells personalised licence number plates. The provincial Cabinet approved the sale of personalised licence numbers in November 1996 at a fee of R1 500-00, inclusive of the licence plates and the sale of these plates has since proved to be a resounding success leading to many other provinces introducing the concept. The additional revenue generated from the sale of personalised licence numbers is channeled towards a dedicated fund for the building and upgrading of rural access roads and road safety initiatives in the province.

In an effort to intensify the sale of personalised numbers in order to generate additional funds to fast track development in the province, it was decided to hold a personalised licence number competition for the months of November and December 2001. All persons who purchased personalised licence numbers during these months were automatically entered into this competition and stand a chance to win a free personalised licence number for themselves or for someone special.

The draw will take place tomorrow (Tuesday), 29th January 2002 at the RTI Traffic Training College, 224 Prince Alfred Street, Pietermaritzburg commencing at 10H30.
