CLERK AT RTI ROSSBURGH ARRESTED FOR FRAUD
Head of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, Dr Kwazi Mbanjwa has
welcomed the arrest of Ms Nomusa Patience Mkhize, 26 years of age, from
the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Rossburgh in Durban for taking in
monies for services rendered and not handing the money over to be
banked.
"This arrest forms part of our continual efforts to clean up our
Department. We will do everything possible to remove all forms of
corruption from within our ranks. We will not rest until we have sorted
out this criminality and we want to warn officials who are still involved
in corrupt practices that they will be caught," said Dr
Mbanjwa.
Ms Mkhize was employed as a clerk at the Drivers’
Licence Conversion Section at RTI Rossburgh and was arrested by members of
the SAPS Commercial Branch for fraud on 21 October and appeared in the
Durban Regional Court. She was released on R10 000 bail.
During June
this year, information was received wherein it was alleged that one of the
clerks employed at the Rossburgh Test Centre was defrauding the Department
of Transport by receiving monies for services rendered but not declaring
the money.
Acting on this information an investigation was launched by the RTI
Special Inspectorate into these allegations. The initial investigation
covered a period of about a month and it was found that there was a large
shortfall in the cash takings that could not be accounted for. Further
investigations conducted by the Department’s Internal Control Division
confirmed the findings of the initial investigation.
