DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHTS CAMPAIGN
With the school holidays upon us, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Mr
S'bu Ndebele has urged motorists to support the National Minister of
Transport, Dr Dullah Omar's call for drivers' to switch on their headlamps
when travelling during the day in order to create more visibility
all-round as a means to reduce deaths on our roads this festive season.
According to research, driving with your headlamps on during the day
can reduce the chances of road crashes significantly. Pedestrians can also
see the vehicle from afar. Drivers of vehicles in opposite directions can
also see each other from a distance, even when the other driver is not
alert enough.
This was also recommended by the University of Natal Accident Research
Centre (UNIARC) when they conducted a survey last December. The results
indicated that both motorists and pedestrians would welcome the use of
headlamps during the day so that vehicles are more visible whilst in
motion.
In addition to the Day Time Running Lights Campaign, traffic officers
will keep their blue rotating lights on continuously from dawn to dusk on
designated days when high volumes of traffic are expected.
Meanwhile, MEC Ndebele will officially unveil the province's road
safety plans on Monday, 8 December 2003 at 10h00 at the Tongaat Toll Plaza
on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. All media are invited to attend. Please
note picture opportunities.
