STRIKING TRUCK DRIVERS THREATENED TO SET ALIGHT A TRUCK CARRYING
ETHANOL
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr.
Bheki Cele strongly condemns a very irresponsible act by striking truck
drivers in Durban's Warwick Avenue this morning. This follows a situation
where truck drivers were stopped by police and fire department when they
were trying to set alight a truck carrying ethanol. This is part of their
on going strike that started two weeks ago.
In his stern warning against unruly truck drivers, Cele said "we
will hunt down those who are responsible for attempts of arson and will
impose harsh penalties to those who are breaking the law. Police and Road
Traffic Inspectorate will ensure adequate visibility so that those who
want to work must do so without fear of intimidation."
In Durban last week, six trucks were impounded and nine drivers charged
for leaving trucks unattended to. Truck drivers who were charged were not
participating in the strike but were attacked and forced to leave trucks
parked on the road for fear of intimidation.
