KZN TRANSPORT INSTITUTES A TRIBUNAL ON STANGER/MAPHUMULO TAXI CONFLICT
Since Monday, 8 people have been killed in a renewed taxi conflict
in the Stanger/ Maphumulo area. Mbanjwa said on Wednesday that he met with
representatives from both associations who indicated that the new conflict was over
the ownership of the Darnell taxi route.
Both associations claim the route was theirs and Dr Mbanjwa said
the departmental investigation has revealed that neither of the associations have
legal permits to operate on the route. He said operators affiliated to the Maphumulo
Taxi Association did not convert their radius permits into routes permits and
therefore their permits lapsed.
Mbanjwa also said the Stanger Taxi Association has never used
the Darnell route and thus the department was therefore investigating how the Transport
Board issued them with the permits for the routes they have never used.
He further said that the tribunal which will be led by a senior
advocate will hold hearings from Saturday and he expects a legal judgement to be
issued by Monday the 11th of July 2005.
