SIX
PEOPLE KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING TAXI AND TRUCK
Six people including a seven month infant and a one-year old baby have
been killed in a horrific crash between a truck and a minibus taxi on the
R74 Road in Loskop outside Escourt. Twelve other people sustained injuries
and are reported to be in a stable condition in hospital.
Preliminary reports have revealed that due to a bad weather condition
and traffic congestions on the R 74, the truck driver tried to overtake
and collide into the minibus taxi in the opposite direction. Six people
were killed instantly whilst twelve others sustained injuries. The minibus
taxi was transporting people from Escourt to Loskop and most of the
passengers were workers.
The Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr
Bheki Cele conveys his sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Cele
said, "Drivers must be more cautious and careful on the road during
rainy weather and keep to a safe following distance. Headlights must be
switched on all the time to add more visibility on the road."
Transport CEO Dr. Kwazi Mbanjwa is expected to visit the scene of an
accident and those in hospital tomorrow morning (March 11, 2005).
Six dockets of culpable homicide are being investigated by the police
and investigations are still underway.
