N2 NYONI ACCIDENT CLAIMED SIX LIVES
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and
Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele, sent his condolences to the bereaved families of
six people who lost their lives in a horrific crash involving two trucks
and a bakkie.
The accident occurred in N2 off-ramp road near Nyoni
when the driver of the bakkie carrying five people pulled over alongside
the road. A truck belonging to Forest Services that was coming from behind
hit the bakkie forcing it onto the road where it subsequently collided
head-on with a truck traveling on the opposite direction.
Six people including the driver of the truck were
killed instantly. Three people sustained serious injuries and were taken
to a nearby hospital. SAPS are investigating circumstances that led to the
gruesome accident. Six charges of culpable homicide are being
investigated. One passenger from the bakkie was airlifted to a hospital in
Durban.
"The number of road accidents involving trucks and
bakkies are a heavy source of concern. Law enforcements must be harsh
especially on trucks and justice must take its cause to ensure that such
accidents are no more," said Cele.
