PRESS BRIEFING ON TAXI VIOLENCE, MONDAY 14 FEBRUARY AT 11 AM IN THE
MEC'S BOARDROOM (PMB)
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and
Liaison, Mr Bheki Cele will be hosting a Media briefing today at 11am to
address issues surrounding an ongoing Taxi feud between the Mpumalanga and
Pinetown Taxi Associations.
A month ago MEC Cele and Transport CEO, Dr, Kwazi
Mbanjwa had a meeting with both associations that resulted in a decision
by the MEC to temporarily suspend the routes between Mpumalanga and
Pinetown. Tomorrow Cele is expected to announce the long awaited decision
regarding the matter after long discussions with the associations.
Since the suspension of the taxi routes only bus
operators have been transporting commuters along the Mpumalanga/Pinetown
routes. A few weeks ago Cele had a meeting with the mass democratic
structures in Hammarsdale in addressing the issue and is expected to have
a mass meeting with the members of the community in due course.
