MEC BHEKI CELE DECLARED WAR ON ILLEGAL TAXI STRIKE
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki Cele together with SAPS, Metro Police, Road Traffic Inspectorate and Shanela are to meet with the KZN Transport Alliance to instruct them to uphold the law.
This is a result of the failure by the KZN Transport Alliance to get a permit to hold a march that is scheduled to take place on Monday.
The march is set to start at Curries Fountain and end up in Truro House.
Among their complains include the waiting period to obtain the road permits and the recapitalization programme.
MEC Bheki Cele said "I encourage the leaders of these taxi operators to utilize the department's open door policy and engage in discussions; however as both the MEC for Transport as well as of the police, I will not allow nor tolerate anyone deliberately breaking the law". He also emphasised that doors for his departments to negotiate are open 24 hours with all stakeholders.
"We are in agreement with organized taxi association and KZN taxi council on the recapitalization programme, and we see no need for disgruntled operators not to use avenue provided by the Department to resolve any problems they might have, and we will use every power in our hands to ensure that no illegal actions take place. It is the department's mandate to ensure that the people of this province are provided with a safe, efficient and affordable transport service.
Meanwhile MEC Bheki Cele visits to Umsinga has been postponed to Sunday 19 June 2005 at Enadi Hlanzeni Primary School starting at
09h00.
