TEN PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN SOUTH COAST ACCIDENTS
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki
Cele will visit survivors of the two accidents that occurred yesterday
near Port Shepstone. Five people were killed in one accident involving a
minibus taxi and a four ton truck in Wilson on the N2 near Ezingolweni.
The minibus taxi was traveling from Durban to Matatiale. The minibus
driver lost control while taking a bend and collided with an oncoming
truck. Three people died instantly on the scene and two died later in
hospital. The minibus was carrying 21 passengers.
In another accident a taxi driver was arrested. This follows an
accident that happened in the Magog location at Umzumbe where the taxi
traveling on a steep gravel road experienced brake failure. The driver
jumped out of the moving taxi after realizing that the vehicle’s brakes
had failed, leaving 12 passengers. Five people died on the scene and the
survivors were taken to different hospitals around Port Shepstone.
MEC Bheki Cele is extremely devastated and heart broken, he conveys his
condolences to the members of the bereaved families. Cele said "we
will ensure that all aspects pertaining to these accidents are thoroughly
investigated.
MEC will go to accidents scenes and visit survivors in hospitals around
Port Shepstone today at 14h00.
