MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR 11 PEOPLE KILLED IN SOUTH COAST LAST WEEK SATURDAY
Date: Thursday, 30 June 2005
Time: 10 am
Venue: Magog Primary School (Mzumbe)
KwaZulu-Natal Transport CEO, Dr. Kwazi Mbanjwa will attend the memorial
service of 11 people who were killed in two separate accidents in South
Coast on Saturday last week. The memorial service will be held tomorrow
on Thursday at 10 am at Magog Primary School eMzumbe.
Five people were killed in one accident involving a minibus taxi and
a four tonne truck in Wilson N2 near Ezingolweni. The minibus taxi was
traveling from Durban to Matatiale. The minibus driver lost control while
taking a bend and collided with an oncoming truck. Three people died
instantly on a scene and two died later in hospital. The minibus was
carrying 21 passengers.
In another accident a taxi driver was arrested. This follows an accident
that happened in the Magog location at Umzumbe where the taxi traveling
on a steep gravel road experienced brake failure. The driver jumped out
of the moving taxi after realizing that the vehicle’s brakes had failed,
leaving 12 passengers. Five people died on the scene and one died yesterday
in a Port Shepstone hospital.
Members of the Transport Portfolio Committee are also expected to attend
the memorial service.
