EIGHT PEOPLE KILLED IN HORROR CRASH
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki
Cele have expressed shock and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved
families of eight people who were killed in a horror crash on the R102
intersection between Old Main Road and Saunders at Isipingo south of
Durban.
According to eyewitnesses a Toyota Camry entered the road unsafely at
the intersection. The Minibus Taxi swerved to avoid the car and collided
head on to the Bus which was travelling from Isipingo. Upon Impact eight
people from the Minibus Taxi including the driver died instantly whilst 18
others sustained injuries and have been admitted to nearby Hospitals in
Durban.
"We have lost 224 lives out of 189 crashes since the 1st
of December in this province alone, clearly someone out there is not
getting the message clearly, I again urge all road users to keep to the
rules of the road and be 100 % Compliant. Cele Said.
"Reports have revealed that the minibus taxi was carrying 26
passengers on board which is ridiculous and unreasonable, I strongly
appeal to all public transport operators to be more cautious on the road
for they are not carrying loads but somebody else’s family. On Christmas
Eve we lost 10 lives in two separate accidents and today on the New Years
Eve we have lost 8 lives in one accident, Road safety is everybody’s
responsibility let us all Arrive Alive in 2006" Cele added.
Cele is expected to visit the scene of an accident and the survivors in
Mahatma Gandi, King Edward and Addington Hospitals this afternoon at 14h30
pm (31/12/05).
