SCRAPPING OF SKOROKORO TAXI VEHICLES
The KwaZulu- Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr.
Bheki Cele will launch the long awaited scrapping of old and
unroadworthy taxi vehicles in KwaZulu-Natal. The event will be held on
Saturday, 9 December 2006 at Woodburn Stadium at 10 am .The Taxi
Scrapping event will coincide with the official opening of the Taxi
Scrapping Administrator offices which will be based at Mkhondeni in
Pietermaritzburg.
The taxi scrapping process is part of the Taxi Recapitalisation
programme (TRP) and is a joint intervention by the Taxi Industry and
Government to replace the current ageing fleet with purpose built
vehicles. There will be live demonstration of the scrapping of five taxi
vehicles. This event will also mark the unveiling of the new SABS
approved taxi vehicles.
Most taxi operators have already surrendered their old taxi vehicle
that will be scrapped on the day. The R50 000 fixed scrapping allowance
incentive will be provided to a legal operation per scrapped vehicle
provided all requirements are met. The scrapping incentive will be used
either to purchase new vehicles or to exit the industry to pursue other
interests. According National Department of Transport the target is to
ensure that 85% of old taxi vehicle are recapitalized by 2010.
