MEC CELE WILL OFFICIATE THE HANDING OVER OF BICYCLES TO RURAL
SCHOOL CHILDREN
THURSDAY O1 JUNE 2006, AMAHLUBI SECONDARY - EPHANGWENI MISSION
IN ESTCOURT AT 10 AM
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele
in partnership with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) will donate more than
100 bicycles to learners in the rural schools of Estcourt who walk more than
twenty kilometres to school.
The event coincides with the celebration of Children’s Day which is aimed
at recognising and providing for the needs of children. ACSA has set aside a
budget of R200 000 for this project, which will purchase 245 18-speed bicycles
with helmets. Out of the schools identified, a total 224 bicycles are required.
Amahlubi Secondary school was founded in 1976 by the community of Ephangweni
and built through the funds donated by the community. It is situated in a remote
rural area which is 19 kilometres away from Estcourt. At present, the school is
regarded as one of the big schools around Escourt, having an enrolment of 1119
learners.
