HIV/AIDS

The Department of Transport has recently established a HIV/AIDS committee which is made up of employees and members of organised labour. This committee is in the process of developing a HIV/Aids Policy and procedures.

The Department currently has the following programmes/campaigns dealing with HIV/Aids:-

Awareness Campaign
  • HIV/AIDS pamphlets were designed in the form of a "gambling game", printed in both English and Zulu. These pamphlets are available to all employees;
  • Posters in support of these pamphlets were designed and printed and forwarded to Departmental institutions for display purposes;
  • A help-desk facility was availed for assistance to HIV/AIDS contact lines and institutions for professional assistance;
  • Condotainers were ordered and distributed throughout the Department for installation in ablution blocks and condoms were made available to employees with the assistance of Health Department; and
  • Red ribbons were made available to all counter personnel and employees who are in direct contact with the public, as a token of the Department’s support of the HIV/AIDS prevention campaign.
Training Programme
  • HIV/AIDS training tapes were ordered in 5 official languages to be used during the training programme;
  • Trainers were trained;
  • Training workshops commenced during 2000 to educate employees as well as obtain their commitment in curbing the spreading of HIV/AIDS;
  • Training courses were presented in both English and Zulu and 1 395 employees have attended to date. The training courses are ongoing and the training programme should be finalised by the end of 2003; and
  • Training Courses were incorporated into Management training in areas where employees are in direct contact with the public, such as officials of the Road Traffic Inspectorate who have to deal with accident victims on the roads.
