What does Department of Transport do on its roads?

Department of Transport provides the public with an integrated, accessible and affordable road and public transport infrastructure to provide road and public transport safety and to meet the development needs of the district. In order to do that, Provincial roads, District roads and Local roads are constructed, maintained and repaired by means of

  • Departmental teams and Zibambele Contractors
  • Corporate Contractors
  • Emerging Contractors (Vukuzakhe programme)

Design, specifications, preparing of contract documents, training etc. are prepared by

  • The Department of Transport
  • Consulting Engineers
  • Lead Consultants and Emerging Consultants
  • Also by means of Standard drawings and specifications.

To refine integrated planning within the department an annual business plan (multi year) is prepared that prioritizes the departments projects in terms of the medium term Expenditure Framework. Attention is given to increase rural mobility with the help of joint planning sessions with Rural Road Transport Forums and community Road Safety Councils. The provincial road network and a safe road network are balanced with the priorities of all district councils and municipalities as identified in their Integrated Development Plans (IDP).

Roads, transport planning and traffic must adhere to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Roads Act (Act 4 of 2001). We expect to achieve the above road planning objectives by

  • Consulting communities and stakeholders
  • Creating new sustainable jobs
  • Creating economic opportunities for new market entrants.
  • Facilitating the transfer of skills
  • Alleviating poverty
