The Consequences of Drinking and Driving

  • You will be taken to the nearest police station. It could be in one of the most violent areas in the country;
  • Your alcohol / blood level will be tested. If it shows that you’re over the legal limit you will be charged and held in a cell. These cells are not nice places to be, especially over a weekend. Some of the people you share the cell with may well be gang members, murderers or rapists. Rich or poor the police can’t give you any special treatment. But your cell mates may decide to give you just that;
  • You will be held in the cell until you appear in court on the next working day. Therefore if you are caught on a Friday, it means that you will spend two days in the cell;
  • Your court date will be set. Bail will be set. You may find it more difficult than you think to find a friend or family-member willing to come up with the bail-money;
  • You could wait for up to 4 months or longer for a judgment;
  • If found guilty, the penalties are severe. You could lose your licence and face a heavy fine, or even a prison sentence of up to 6 years;
  • You could also lose your job. Your family may pay a heavy price for your "good time"!
  • Your name could be published in the newspapers with details of your offence and penalties. How humiliating!

Now ask yourself, is it worth risking all that? Is it?

If you can’t have a good time without drinking,
MAKE A PLAN

Sleep over, take a taxi, or get a sober friend to driver. By drinking and driving may kill or maim yourself or others. Even if you do not have an accident, if you are charged with drinking and driving, the experience could still wreck your life!
