ON THE PAVEMENT (1)

The child learns to walk on the pavement away from the kerb. If there is no pavement or kerb, the child learns to walk as far away from the road as possible.

Location

Use the school premises or a quiet road near the school to do this exercise

Method
  • Walk along the pavement with the child and point out where the pavement ends and where the road starts. Point out to the child that the pavement is for pedestrians and the road is for vehicles.
  • To divide the pavement into two lanes, use a skipping rope or stick to ensure that the child sees the division.
  • Encourage the child to walk on the side that is far away from the kerb, and explain why this is necessary.
  • After repeating this exercise several times, ask the child to demonstrate
  • Remember to ask "why" questions.
