Crossing the Road (3)

Children don’t always know which is left and right. To help, the right hand can be referred to as the one with which most children use to write and the other as the left.
Location

Use the school premises or a quiet street without parked cars near the school to do this exercise.

Method
  • Walk the child to the kerb/edge of the pavement and stop. At the same time call out "STOP".
  • Take the child’s head in your hands and gently turn the head to the right, asking: "Can you see anything coming?"
  • Repeat this action for the left and again for the right side, each time asking the child if he/she can see vehicles approaching.
  • Only on hearing the word "no", take the child’s hand and lead him/her across the street. But tell the child to continue to LOOK and LISTEN for traffic. If a vehicle is seen approaching, the child must stop and the repeat the actions of looking right, left and right again.
  • Repeat this exercise a few times before asking the child to demonstrate the exercise.
