Stopping And Distraction (4)

Remember, other children helping with this exercise must first be instructed on what is required of them. This ensures that they themselves do not run on to the street.
Location

Use the school premises or a quiet road near the school to do this exercise.

Method
  • Walk with the child along the pavement.
  • Arrange with the child’s friend to call the child from the opposite side of the road.
  • Should the child change direction and step on to the road, be on hand to restrain the child and call out "Stop".
  • Explain the dangers of running on to the road. Explain why it is important to first stop, look both ways and to listen for traffic before crossing.
  • Repeat this exercise until it becomes automatic.
