Crossing At A Block Pedestrian Crossing (7)

Make sure the child does not think that
he/she can stop traffic. The child is only indicating his/her
intention to cross and making himself/herself more visible to
motorists.
Location
Use a road with such a crossing at off-peak periods.
Method
- Show the child the layout of the block pedestrian crossing.
- Take the child by the hand and approach the kerb and stop. Look
right, left and right again, but remain standing at the kerb until
all vehicles have stopped. Teach the child to indicate his/her
intention to cross by holding out his/her hand in the stop
position in the direction of the vehicles.
- The child must be taught to stay behind the kerb while waiting
for the vehicles to stop.
- This exercise must be repeated several times from both sides of
the road before calling for a demonstration.
