Crossing At The Pedestrian Traffic Light (9)

Ensure that the child can identify colours before attempting this
exercise.
Location
Use a road with a pedestrian traffic light.
Method
- Take the child to a pedestrian traffic light.
- Stand away from the crossing and tell the child what robots do.
- Point to the pedestrian lights and explain that RED means STOP and
that GREEN means WALK.
- Warn the child to stand back from the kerb while the red man shows
and to wait for all vehicles to stop. The child must also make sure
of this even when the green man shows.
- Tell the child to look right, left and right again once the green
man shows. Lead the child by the hand across the street. Remind the
child to walk briskly and to continue to LOOK and LISTEN for
traffic.
- The child must also be urged to look over the shoulder for
oncoming vehicles.
- The child should be asked to demonstrate this only after the
exercise is practised several times.
