What You Can Do As Parents

(Remember your child’s future is in your hands)

Did you know?

More than 32 children die on South African roads every month. It is every parent’s responsibility to educate their children about using roads safely. Give them a chance to enjoy their lives.

What do children know about road safety?

Whatever they know needs constant reinforcement. Therefore parents MUST also help in the education of their children. Demonstrate what you want your child to do and be consistent and patient in your approach.

Where can you get assistance?

Ask your local traffic department or road safety office to help you with relevant information. Write, visit or phone the Road Safety Directorate at the KwaZulu Natal Department of Transport. Our contact details are:

Postal: Private Bag X9043, Pietermaritzburg, 3200
Physical: 172 Burger Street, Pietermaritzburg, 3200
Telephone: 033-3558782/8065

What can you do?

The best way to educate your child is through demonstrations of what you want your child to learn. Read the information on this website and do the activities with your child. These are in downloadable format.

You can also take your child to a section of a road with a road sign that you want your child to remember.

What about your child’s understanding of a car?

Children associate vehicles with pleasant experiences such as going to town, the beach or other pleasure trips. They do not see vehicles as a source of potential danger. Try to see the world from your child’s perspective. This will enable you to guide them better on their journey through life.
