Skateboard-Riding is Fun

Skateboard related injuries include sprains, fractures, contusions and abrasions, and even death. Several factors such as lack of protective clothing, poor board maintenance and irregular riding surfaces are the causes. Injuries to skateboarders usually occur during falls. It should be remembered that skateboard riding requires good body control.

Before using your skateboard you should check it. Look out for loose, broken or cracked parts; sharp edges on metal boards; slippery top surfaces; and wheels with nicks and cracks. A qualified repair person should attend to the defects right away.

You should wear protective gear at all times when skateboarding. It is essential to wear closed, slip-resistant shoes, protective headgear such as a helmet and specially designed padding. Although the padding may not fully protect you if you fall, it will reduce the severity of the injury. The padding will absorb a fall’s impact. When choosing protective gear, ensure that it does not interfere with your movement, vision or hearing. Body padding should fit comfortably and not be too tight. If it is too tight it may restrict blood circulation and reduce your ability to move freely. On the other hand, padding should not be too loose as it could slip off.
