Quick Biking Hints to Keep You Safe
HERE are some quick rules to follow in maintaining and riding your
bicycle:
Keeping your bicycle in good condition

sure the air pressure in the tyres is in the recommended range printed
on the side of the tyres
- Check tyres for big cuts, bulges and bubbles
- Keep the chains oiled. A dry chain can lock up or break when you least
expect it
- Lift each wheel and give it a spin. Make sure it is not rubbing
against the break pads, frame, or something else
Riding on the Road
- Know local traffic rules. Cyclists must obey the same rules as
motorists
- Always ride in a single file and in the same direction as other
traffic
- Always signal your intentions
- Never wear headphones while riding; they affect your ability to hear
traffic
- Stay alert always. Watch for other vehicles, pedestrians, potholes and
objects that may be lying on the road
- Communicate with motorists by making eye contact
Make sure you are seen and be seen
- Wear bright coloured clothing
- Avoid riding your bicycle at night. Young children should not ride at
night
- If you ride at night: use lights; ride with reflectors (they can be on
your pedals, wheels and spokes); wear reflective clothing or material,
especially on your ankles, wrists, back and helmet
