Freeway Incident Management is a preplanned, agreed set of procedures and
protocols activated when a freeway incident occurs. It co-ordinates the
responses of all emergency services to the scene of an incident and provides a
mechanism for efficiently managing the scene of an incident. Its aim is to clear
the freeway of any obstruction and to restore traffic flow to normal as quickly
as possible.
An incident is not merely a major or minor incident.
It can also be:
- a shoulder / lane blockage e.g. spilled load, broken down vehicle
- a construction zone
- a special event e.g. Comrades Marathon
