Combat Rifle Club

Background

  • The public transport enforcement unit combat rifle club was established in February 2009. The rationale behind the establishment of the club was to nurture and sharpen our members’ rifle handling and shooting skills. The exposure and dangers that our members are exposed to in the execution of their duties have made it necessary that we come up with these initiatives that would ensure that our members do possess the necessary skills in order to combat taxi violence and that such skills are retained.
  • The constitution of our combat rifle club is in line and subordinate to the provincial, national and international body, it is in compliance with the united nation’s requirements.

Vision

  • Our vision is to achieve a high level of competency among our members in the handling and usage of rifles and the application thereof, when dealing with violent public transport related situations that require extra ordinary measures. We want our members to compete at least at a national level and feature among the best in the country from the different disciplines. If we achieve a representative at an international level, that will be another feather on our cap.

Status Quo And Financial Implications

  • The team comprises of nineteen (19) members. These members are participating in the league shoots, which are both locally based and provincial competitions. From this team we have an average total of eight (8) members who qualified to participate at a national level.

The Financial Implication Is As Follows:

  • Affiliation fees per member per year : R100-00
  • League shoots per member per shoot : R50-00
  • Provincial shoots per member per shoot : R200-00
  • National shoots per member per shoot : R800-00

Achievements

  • From the very outset, it is worth mentioning that one member has obtained the national colours from the recent national competition which was held in Bloemfontein during May 2012.
  • The rest of the members have made the following achievements since the inception of the club:
  • 23 gold medals
  • 186 silver medals
  • 214 bronze medals
  • The general achievement which is very fulfilling is the fact that the competency level among the members has significantly improved since the establishment of the club.

Control Documents

  • These documents are the Section 56 summonses that are issued by the PTEU, TTIU and TTIG members and that has been captured on the Trafman computer system and that is ready to be delivered to the courts by the officers of the PTEU.
  • PTEU officers operate Province wide. It must be ensured that control documents are delivered to courts timeously. Failing which, matters are struck off the court roll and the notices withdrawn.

Transport Officers

  • These duties are done by officers from the PTEU and they are to ensure that the fleet is serviced in time and also bookings to done with first auto with regards to these services and repairs.
  • Part of their duties is also to keep the records for each vehicle up to date such as first auto reports, invoices, accident reports, etc.
  • When vehicles are purchased it is also their function to ensure that arrangements have been done with regards to the installation of the blue lights and siren to each vehicle. The same applies when the old vehicles have to be de-installed and placed on Board of Survey.

Logistics And Statistics

  • These duties are performed by officers from the PTEU who know and understand the unique work environment and its needs with regards to equipment.
  • Statistics are compiled on a daily basis by officers of the PTEU and forwarded to the Stats Officer who has been dedicated in ensuring that stats are collated accurately and disseminated to the MEC and the HOD respectively.

PTEU Football Club

Background

  • The public transport enforcement unit football club was established in August 2002. The rationale behind the establishment of the team was to establish and sustain cohesion within the PTEU members and creation of dying for each other spirit among the team members. The team was solely established by the former members of the PTEU with one common goal and vision which was called “dying for one another in the playing field, means dying for one another in the working field”.
  • The team has never disappointed and has contributed quiet significantly in keeping the public transport enforcement unit intact and being able to deal successfully with whatever challenges are thrown their way. The team has been in existence for a decade and it is getting stronger and maturing with age.

Status Quo

  • The team is affiliated to the inter-departmental soccer league comprising of the state departments in the Pietermaritzburg and the surroundings which stretches out as far as Ixopo, Nottingham road and Greentown. The league is made out of eighteen (18) teams which play in the two legged point system league. The winner, 2nd and 3rd placed teams are all rewarded at the end of the season which lasts about nine months before the winner is decided.
  • The teams also participate in a one day knockout cup “commonly known as a soccer bonanza”. This cup is played by all the eighteen teams that are affiliated to the league and the winner is determined in the final. In t5his case the teams that are awarded with prices are 1st and 2nd placed teams.

Achievements

  • Since the inception of the team in ten years as stated earlier. The following achievements have been accomplished:
  • Won 3 out of 10 league championships
  • Won 5 out 10 knockout cups
  • The team has also participated in other soccer tournaments outside Pietermaritzburg. The one tournament that comes to mind is the Estcourt soccer tournament which is co-ordinated and funded Mr. Mashiloane. Pteu has won a total of 4 out of 6 tournaments.

Constraints

  • Lack of grounds and training facilities – the team traditionally relied on the Msunduzi municipality grounds for training and soccer games. These facilities have recently been demolished and re-designed for the other sport codes. The recent development has left the team without any facilities to either train or play on.
  • Lack of resources – the team survives on the generous contribution by the team members for the affiliation fees, soccer kits, soccer balls, etc. A financial assistance of any kind will go a long way in terms of securing better training and playing facilities and will certainly add vigour to the spirit of the members and contributes towards sustaining the team.
