Ndebele's DoT shows KZN pedestrians how to be safe on the road
Road shows aimed at promulgating road safety awareness
amongst pedestrians in KwaZulu Natal are a success, says Road Safety manager, Mr
Bongani Nxumalo.
Mr Nxumalo also pointed out that engineering intervention
initiatives aimed at improvement the kind of infrastructure or facilities that
will be conducive to pedestrian safety are also being undertaken.
According to research findings, almost 38 percent of all
accidents are pedestrian related and the Department is very committed to
reducing pedestrian fatalities and injuries.
To respond to the apparent challenge, the DOT – under the
leadership of Minister Ndebele – has introduced programmes that encourage
public participation and empowerment. This is a practical translation of
Ndebele’s numerous endeavours to ensuring a safer environment on KZN roads.
In 2001 the DOT’s Road Safety Directorate identified three
areas within the province in which it launched its pedestrian safety management
plan. The aim of the project was to reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries in
an integrated manner by involving all stakeholders, including the community.
Three areas were identified to undertake this project,
including Nongoma (R66) from Ulundi, Shakaskraal to Groutville (R102) and
Nottingham Road (R103). In the three areas, engineering remediation is also
being undertaken - with heightened emphasis on Education and Enforcement.
The Arrive Alive Road Show is an education intervention and
it is being undertaken in conjunction with National Department of Transport. The
aim is to make road safety fun and entertaining but at the same time
educational. This event is an awareness activity and is being held throughout
South Africa.
In KwaZulu Natal there are three such Road Shows. There is
the flagship event that will be held in Groutville on 29 May 2003 and smaller
events at Nongoma and Nottingham on 28 and 31 May 2003 respectively.
Celebrities will be performing at the flagship event where
they will be entertaining communities but at the same time endorsing road safety
and in particular pedestrian safety.
A Road Safety Quiz and Board game will also be part of the
Road Show with the anticipation of active involvement from the community,
particularly the learners.
