More than twenty six thousand people from various denominations gathered to pray for safety on the roads in Empangeni during December 2004.

Community Safety and Liaison MEC Bheki Cele invited different churches to pray for accidents all over KwaZulu-Natal. Empangeni was chosen because of high rates of road accidents that had occurred in the area.

Addressing the massive crowd, he appealed to motorist to commit themselves by obeying the rules on the road. This includes pedestrians drinking at home and the community reporting bad drivers on the Mpimpa Hotline with the aim of eliminating road fatalities.

"I see churches as better platforms of conveying the road safety message - we may believe in different Gods but the issue of road safety affects us all," said the MEC.

The road safety campaign was joined by Metro rail, which provided trains from different area of KwaZulu-Natal for people to attend the prayer day.

In supporting the road safety initiative, Premier Food is donating fifty bags of mealie-meal which is to be distributed amongst needy families who lost their loved ones on the roads.

Speaking to Ezethu, Premier Food Regional Executive Manager, Pinky Nzimande said that the gesture forms part of the company’s social responsibility programme "where we want to join hands and speak in one voice, which is to save lives."
