Women, the Flag Bearers of Empowerment & Development

As a Department we are proud to have strong gender representation across all levels of the organisation, and we salute the contribution of all women employed at the Department in ensuring high standards of service delivery.

Within a space of only eight years there are women in very senior management positions and in posts such as Chief Engineers and Industrial Technicians, who assist in controlling this province’s transport infrastructure. Women are also more visible as Provincial Inspectors and Traffic officers who are committed to saving lives on our roads. The invaluable role that women are playing is not limited to these professions of course, and within the Department hundreds of women are employed and contribute to the overall achievements of the Department. Their jobs may not be high profile but without them the Department would not be where it is today.

WE SALUTE ALL THE WOMEN OF THE DEPARTMENT!

Zibambele

No feature on women and empowerment would be complete without mentioning the Department’s internationally acclaimed Zibambele Programme, which is spearheaded by women. Zibambele is the Department’s flagship poverty alleviation programme. It is a form of labour-intensive road maintenance programme in which a household is contracted to maintain a specific length of road, and targets women-headed households. Through this innovative programme, many women-headed households are now able to put food on their tables and meet other pressing needs such as schooling and health care. Zibambele is currently benefiting more than 14 000 in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Minister of Transport, Mr S’bu Ndebele, recently launched the Zibambele Training Programme on 25 August 2003. Also launched was the Zibambele CD by well-known music artists Makitaza and Vusi Ximba. The CD is another mechanism for communicating the Zibambele Programme and other transport messages to the public, and follows on from the success of the Department’s road safety CDs, Asiphephe 1 and 2.
