KZN DoT Salutes Women of the Department

Read the MEC's Message

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport recognises the important role of women in the transformation of South Africa and the value of their social and economic empowerment.

The Zibambele Road Maintenance Programme is one of the Department's well known programmes, which is a form of labour intensive road maintenance in which a woman-headed household is contracted to maintain a specific length of road. Through this innovative programme, many women-headed households in the Province are now able to put food on their tables and meet other pressing needs such as schooling and health care.

Zibambele has put to work women who would normally be left out of any opportunity because of their poverty. In the process, the long term prospects of the family are enhanced through improved access to schooling, nutrition, training and credit.

The investments made to the programme since its inception in 2000 is itself a statement which shows the seriousness of the Department to support pro-women as well as pro-poor programmes. Over 22 200 women are currently employed in the Zibambele Programme. From an initial budget of only R10 million, the programme has gained momentum over the years, to a magnitude of R120 million.

LADIES, WE SALUTE YOU FOR THE INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTION YOU MAKE TO THE OVERALL ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT!!!
