KZN DoT Supports National Transport Month
The month of October has been declared National Transport Month. The purpose
of Transport Month is to champion the speedy transformation of public transport
services.
The key objectives of the campaign are to:
- Raise awareness of the important role and benefits of public transport in
the economy and society;
- Ensure popular participation in and partnerships for public transport
transformation;
- Showcase government's initiatives for immediate improvements in public
transport service delivery;
- Prepare the South African public for impending measures to control private
car use in favour of public transport in metropolitan areas;
- Highlight the shortcomings in public transport, in particular, the lack of
frequent public transport services in the most rural areas of the country.

As part of the National Transport Month programme, KZN DoT will be hosting
several events during October, including the following:
Sod Turning of the John Ross Highway - P496 on the North Coast commencing at
10:00 on 4 October 2005
National Minister of Transport, Mr Jeff Radebe and KZN MEC for Transport,
Community Safety & Liaison, Mr Bheki Cele will be performing the sod turning
ceremony for this project. The John Ross Highway project is one of the huge
projects in KZN that is aimed at economic development and identifying job
opportunities through infrastructure development. This project will result in
economic upliftment for the entire community of Empangeni and Richards Bay
through skills development and job creation, thus alleviating poverty and
working towards building a South Africa that truly belongs to all. Furthermore
the project will promote co-operative governance as it involves the three
spheres of government; National, Provincial and Local.
Sod Turning of Sqandulweni River Bridge at uMkomaas on 7 October 2005
This project will provide communities, in particular school learners, with road
access to schools, health services and other critical services.
Launch of Passenger Train / Refurbished Coaches on 16 October 2005
The National Minister of Transport, Mr Jeff Radebe will be attending this event,
which is intended to strengthen and promote the concept for rehabilitating and
reviving the rail network in partnership with the South African Rail Commuter
Corporation.
Re-Launch by National DoT of the Keep Left Pass Right Campaign on 27 October
2005
The purpose of this event is to launch the KZN Department of Transport's Keep
Left Pass Right initiative as a national campaign. As part of efforts to
reduce the number of road rage incidents, ease traffic flow and invariably
reduce the number of road crashes, the Department launched the KEEP LEFT,
PASS RIGHT road safety campaign in July 2005. The primary purpose of
this campaign is to encourage motorists to drive on the left side of the road at
all times, and to use the right lane expressly when overtaking another vehicle.
The KEEP LEFT, PASS RIGHT rule is not new and is one of the most
basic and fundamental golden road rules.
Maritime Awards to be held at the ICC in Durban on 28 October 2005
The objective of this event is to recognize and promote individuals with
outstanding performance in the Maritime Industry.
