TRANSPORT MONTH 2008 – TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE –
CREATING A LASTING LEGACY 2010 AND BEYOND
The theme for this year’s transport month is “Transport Infrastructure –
creating a lasting legacy 2010 and beyond”. Activities during the month of
October will be used as a dry-run to showcase Transport Infrastructure readiness
in preparation for the 2010 World Cup Soccer Tournament. The transport month
approach will furthermore advance government commitment to improve public
transport systems as our legacy for 2010 and beyond.
Transport Month is a government initiative aimed at creating awareness in
matters of road safety, promoting the usage of public transport and fast
tracking the infrastructure development particularly in rural areas, hence
national Transport Minister Jeff Radebe and Transport MEC’s declared October as
Transport Month in 2005.
In KwaZulu-Natal the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr. Bheki
Cele officially launched Transport Month on the 2nd of October (2008) at the
Pietermaritzburg Railway Station. Cele also launched the Transport Academy
targeting taxi and truck operators as a pioneer and 2010 legacy project.
The transport academy is aimed at training all public transport operators on
issues of customer care and general management of the public transport industry
in changing its image for the better for preparations of 2010 and beyond. He
will then proceed to the Wardley Stadium, Edendale where artists L’vovo, Big Nuz,
DJ Tira, DJ Snazzy and Shon G will be performing. A detailed calendar of October
Transport Month will be unveiled and a multi–disciplinary road block will be
staged in Pietermaritzburg in the afternoon.
