Mobile Speed Humps (For Safety)
Regional Engineers, Dundee
A cost cannot be placed on the lives of our road worker staff. The danger of
speeding vehicles approaching road workers, especially where our Blacktop
Patching Teams are busy, is great.
With this in mind our MMI, Joe Fourie and our Acting Engineer of Dundee,
Johan Outram put their heads together and came up with a Mobile Speed Hump to
slow the traffic down.
The prototype was constructed out of conveyor belts that were vulcanized
together. The total height being 50mm, the width of the bottom belt is 500mm,
total length 3.5m and the weight been 63kg.
This speed hump is very effective and was tested with Blacktop Teams. The
Speed Humps are now being manufactured by Rubcon in Dundee as a molded unit,
which can be split into sections for easy handling by one person. Paint has been
manufactured to highlight the Speed Hump.
The Speed Hump does not have to be fixed to the tar road in anyway as it does
not move on the tar surface at all. We hope this may be of interest to the other
maintenance units.
This portable Speed Hump was demonstrated at a meeting in Ladysmith where
Road Superintendents, Foremen and RTI Traffic Officers were enthusiastic about
this innovation.
Members of our staff were killed in the Newcastle area a year ago and it is
sincerely hoped that this innovation will enhance safety of our workers on our
roads.
